I just assembled a brand new gaming computer yesterday.all the parts are running fine and I can go into the bios menu, I have a MSI z270-A-Pro and the problem I'm having is that my hard drive isn't being detected. when I go into the storage section it shows the sata port number and model not detected on the list. I know I plugged it in because I can hear the hard drive running. also I tried installing windows but can't due to the hard drive not being detected. it says I have 0.00mb available.

Does anyone know what I could've done wrong? or how to make the the computer detect the hard drive?

Solution
make sure the mb has the newest bios file. with the newer bios and mb if you use m2 or pci ssd you lose some of the sata ports if those features are on in the bios. also make sure the sata port set to achi not raid.

I know this may sound strange, but I would try swapping SATA ports. My drive randomly stopping being detected yesterday and when I switched SATA ports it starting working. Give it a shot.

@Nerdy nerd I have both cables plugged into the HDD.

@tater I tried it before posting

Also when I go into board explorer in bios it shows the other parts but all the sata ports say empty. Could it be that i didn't plug in the hdd correctly?

Even with sata worst case you change the boot order and the bios proceeds sequentially down the list of drives you said it is allowed to boot from looking for a boot partition.. (If one existed)

It's possible the sata cable is damaged.

Try using a different sata cable making sure there is no dust on the connectors.

It's also possible the drive is doa or dead on arrival if nothing else seems to be the issue.

Edit: Just reread the post. You can physically plug both drives in wrong, the connectors aren't reversible like the new usb-c.
This applies to both sata data and the sata power cable.
But I would hope you looked at the connections and don't just mash them together using full force lol.

You probably didn't mean that but i wanted to be clear lol
