Hey, maybe someone here can help with this. I just helped build a computer for my friend and he is having a unique issue that I have never seen before. Basically, when we start up a game, Smite or Hearthstone or anything else, the screen freezes. Just the screen, the sound is still there and all other functions work. To make this even more interesting, when we TAB out of the game it 'refreshes' the screen. So, basically, when we go back into the game something new is showing and we can click where things should be, then Tab out and back in, and we can view that new screen. I have never seen anything like this and any help is greatly appreciated.

I thought it was a driver issue with the graphics card but going back to an older version didn't help. We got it to work once after a hard reset but then after the computer was turned off the problem returned.

System Specs:
MOBO: Asus Sabertooth z170 mark 1
CPU: Intel i7-6700K
GPU: MSI gtx970

Solution
Hi,

Please do try doing a clean install of the graphics card that may do the trick.
- First is to go to Device Manager and uninstall the Nvidia graphics driver.
- Next is to open Programs and Features then uninstall anything related to Nvidia.
- Once completely uninstalled, download and install the latest driver.
- Here's the link: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
- Reboot the PC once the latest driver has been installed.
- After the reboot, do set Nvidia as the default GPU.
- Here's how: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2615/~/how-do-i-customize-optimus-profiles-and-settings%3F
- Do also check if there's any BIOS update that is needed by your PC.

But he already tried to do so...

OP, have you tried reinstalling the games?

Yeah, we have tired reinstalling both games, interestingly enough some steam games will run but we are trying what Laptop_Nerd said and will come back with an answer after the process finishes.

Doing the clean wipe of all nvidia stuff worked, so thank you!
