Can you enter the bios and watch the cpu temp to see if it is trying to over heat since I'm guessing the scratch situation was on the thermal paste for the heat sink?

From my past trials you could have a bad motherboard either from the box or static short. From what I know and if I'm wrong someone correct me the motherboard or processor are the only components if not installed in the tower are in danger of static. Most ram, video cards, etc are protected. Where did you purchase the hardware from?

I had to exchange 4 Asus motherboards to get one that worked from TigerDirect the "tech" tested everything each motherboard had a different senerio either it would "POST" and go to bios, or start the "OS" install and freeze halfway through, or start then shut off, and turn on with no display and just run doing nothing.
