New PC build loading Linux through USB "reboot and select proper boot device"

Hi. I've just built a new PC and I'm trying to load Linux onto it through a 16gb sansdisk USB and I keep getting the message "reboot and select proper boot device" I'm running an asrock h97m motherboard but I don't have an internal optical drive. Any help or fix is much appreciated.
Specs:
H97M-itx motherboard
1TB sea gate hard drive
i5 4590
Cooler master elite 130
16GB ram
Gtx 970 Asus strix
Corsair 750m

What version of distrubiton/linux? How did you load linux on to the usb? I use http://www.linuxliveusb.com

BTW The drivers for your hardware are tied to the version of linux you are using, since you use newer hardware use the latest version possible
