Hello Community,

So I'm looking for make a huge improvement to my outdated PC. I'm interested to go further to the new AMD family but I'm not sure on which CPU should I pick.
So first of all this is what will be left from my current set up:

https://ie.pcpartpicker.com/list/MmvhFG

At the above build you need to consider the hardware that I should change, which are:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-890-GPA
RAM: 16GB (4x4) DDR3 1333Mhz Corsair Vengeance

What to consider for my new build:
  • Budget maximum 1000 Euro (including shipping costs), but if less is even better
  • Gaming essentially but also streaming and photo/video editing (as video editing I'm not saying 3D rendering)
  • 1080p is the maximum resolution
  • For the MoBo, the audio system I have now needs to have other ports which usually are included on the majority of the ATX MoBo (not only the In/Out/Mic port)
  • Longevity and future upgrades
I hope I have included everything you might need.
If you need more information please let me know!

Thanks everybody

To be clear - You want to spend 1000 Euro on a CPU+mobo+RAM upgrade?

I'd recommend upgrading to a 500GB-1TB SSD here. Now's the easiest time.

I didn't say I want to spend 1000 euro, I said this is my Budget limit, which means if I can get CPU + Mobo + RAM within this money range it would be fine!

I would upgrade your PSU as well.

I concur with getting a bigger SSD.

Also, get rid of that power supply. See the first link in my sig for recommendations on high quality power supplies. This is something I cannot emphasize enough. A high quality PSU protects your components in case something goes wrong and the PSU dies, and, even when running, provides clean, stable power, which helps with the longevity of your components.

On a general note for CPUs, I would suggest that the Ryzen 5 2600, Ryzen 5 2600X, and Ryzen 7 2700 are your best choices for cost/performance ratio. I'd actually say stick with the Ryzen 5 models I've listed for now. You can always upgrade to a 3000 series (and maybe 4000 series) Ryzen CPU in the future should you need greater performance.

If you're looking to get the high frame rates that your monitor allows for, you might want to go with a more powerful GPU. That can get expensive, though. I'd say stick with your current GPU on the upgraded system, and see if it feels fine for what you're doing, or if it falls short. You can always upgrade the GPU separately later.

You can take a look at what I did for my son's computer - open the spoilers link and look under the link I have for ChromaTron. Now, those are US prices, and during the pre-Christmas sales, but it gives you a good idea for parts that worked and that I and my son were happy with (I'm frankly not impressed with LEDs and such, but oddly, they tended to be less expensive than other components without LEDs).

You should be able to upgrade to a modern platform for well under €1000 . . . but I tend to lean toward middle-to-high rather than best of the best. Call me stingy, but I'd rather get 80% of the performance for 50% of the price.

Meh, I think the PSU could be upgraded when the RX580 gets retired.

Zizo - I was simply showing the OP what €1000 worth of upgrades looks like. No doubt that 2x8GB would be fine. I also didn't want to skimp on a QLC SSD. Does the mobo need built-in WiFi? Dunno, so I assumed yes.

His PSU is not bad, ~800€:

That's a very good bunch of suggestions here, let me put some more personal 2 cents so maybe you can have better idea on which system should suits me better.

The PSU has 1 year of life, I've purchased it on Jan 2019 when the old one died after a lot of years of hard work. I didn't find any better back in the day so I've picked up the one included in my rig. I do prefer to keep it for a while and then changing it afterwards when I will change GPU as well.

Whilst in terms of price and compatibility probably Ryzen 2xxx is still the best solution, I wanted to have something newer since I'm changing the system now, so I prefer Ryzen 3xxx instead.
My question would be: there is any massive improvements / change from Ryzen 5 3600 to Ryzen 7 3700X?
For Ryzen 3xxx do I need the new Chipset X570 or the B450 is enough?
Which Min/Max RAM frequencies the new Ryzen does support?

That motherboard doesn't meet the sound system requirements. Metal said he needs more than In/Out/Mic.

Metal how many years have you had your PSU? If it is 4+ years old I would get a new one at this point.

Since the PSU is only a year old, then I would hold on to it for now. I made an assumption that it was older than that. The biggest change in performance for the 3700X vs 3600 would be in things that can use all the treads. In theory gaming and streaming at the same time will be better with the 3700X. You can get by with a B450 motherboard, but you would need to be sure to get one that includes the BIOS upgrade right away. However, with the X570 you are guaranteed to have that compatibility right away. For RAM you want 3200-3600MHz RAM with Ryzen 3000 series.

Thanks for the explanation Jeremy. And what about the PCIe 4.0 that X570 does support? I guess it won't be compatible for my GPU at the moment, that's is correct?

Sorry if I ask stupid question, but I'm not very confident with the PC technology for the latest years :D

PCIe 4 is just the newest version of PCIe. It has 2x the bandwidth per lane compared to PCIe 3.0 and is backwards compatible with PCIe 3. Just when you put PCIe 3 device into it the device will run at PCIe 3 speeds.

That motherboard is very bad. Bad VRM that doesn't support 8 cores and no bios flashback so its incompatible with Ryzen 3000.

What are you saying it is a very solid motherboard and it is a ryzen 3000 series ready
huh it doesn't support 8 cores
look at cpu support list it support up to 16 cores (ryzen 9 3950x)
It will throttle with an 8 core because of weak VRM and high VRM temps. That board NEEDS a bios update to support Ryzen 3000 and has NO bios flashback, you will need a 1st or 2nd Gen Ryzen to update the bios. That's why its so cheap.
