I am building a new ryzen 3700x pc. My current/old computer is a 3570k with an r9 290. I plan to carry my ssds to the ne build. I have a few hdd’s that I use for old games that I planned on putting into my old computer as a backup gaming pc. is it worth buying a cheap 500gb ssd for my old computer or should I just use my old hdd?

Solution
I like the idea of selling my old parts but it is the first pc I ever built myself. Kinda want to keep it for sentimental reasons lol

what a gamer hahaha, like you if ever want to play your childhood games, browsing it in your old cabinet feels like you got younger a bit. You'll never know when will your old HDD fails.

So, secure it now. 😀

I might recommend the first option you got there.

As a felllow gamer, you need to secure your gaming files just in case of HDD failure especially, games require RAM memory and for the computer to set the requirements it needs, The unit do the "Physical Memory" which temporarily use your HDD storage for additional storage data for the RAM.

And using your old HDD for your new unit which will do more processing/loading, making RAM and HDD more work. Secure it now haha, it's bad for your saved games cannot be retrieved or corrupted due to sudden HDD failure.

That happened on me before 😀

I would sell the old pc and put the old drives in the new pc myself. Steam/Origin games can be added back in just by adding their location on the HDD as another library in the app plus it's easy enough to move games you are actively playing to the SSD's and move the old ones back to the HDD.

"cheap 500GB SSD" ?

You'll be living with this drive for several years. Now is not the time to go cheap.
Samsung 860 EVO or Crucial MX500.
Or an NVMe drive.

You comment about bringing your old drives tot he new system...obviously, any recommendation would require knowing what you have, and what you plan to do with them.

The cheap ssd will be used in my backup pc. I am moving my 1tb 850 evo and both of my 500gb 840 evos to my new pc. The main question is whether it is worth putting a cheap ssd in my old computer for backup or just use my storage hdd instead?

Haha this guy gets it. My current computer may be the first PC I ever built, but my first actual gaming computer was given to me by my brother. It was a Gateway FX with a pentium d and 9600gt. I will never forget Halo 1 multiplayer and the original counter strike mod! 😊

Just ordered a Pioneer APS-SL3-480 ssd. Nothing special but at least it uses TLC flash. Should be good enough for a couple hours of gaming a year just to revisit my 2010+ games.
