Hi, I just finished putting together my first pc build, and when I turn it on everything lights up and the fans start running, but nothing ever shows up on my monitor and after 10 or so seconds, everything powers off. Then after a few more seconds, it powers back on and the cycle continues. What could be the problem??

Please post your system specs. It could be anything. Bad PSU, bad motherboard or something wrong you did during the setup/installation procedure. Did you use motherboard standoffs in your case? It could also be a sort somewhere between your motherboard and your case. Also make sure that all power cables are properly connected. What you could do, is make sure that your board works outside of the case. So remove it, put it on a non conductive surface and try to turn it on. If it works then you did something wrong during the motherboard installation inside your case. Since this is your first build, this is the most likely scenario.

Sorry for the long time, I just deconstructed my build leaving only the PSU, CPU, CPU Cooler, and motherboard to try and find the source of the problem. Here are these specs:
  • PSU: EVGA Supernova 650 G2
    CPU: Intel Core i7 6700k
Cooler: Cooler Master hyper 212 evo
    Motherboard: gigabyte z170x gaming 5

Once I turned on the power supply everything ran on average roughly 18 seconds before turning off and restarting (including the PSU, however the PSU does work without shutting down when I use the tester). Any idea which one of these parts could be the problem if it can run for that long before rebooting?

First make sure that you read the above guide that anort3 posted.

What you could do is try using your PSU on another system or borrow a PSU from a friend and use it on your system. That way you'll know for sure if your PSU is fine. PSU testers only tell you if the PSU is able to turn on or not and sometimes they report back simple voltages but with no PSU load. They don't tell you whether a PSU is capable of booting up a system successfully.

Also what CPU cooler are you using? Did it come with a support plate which you installed on the back of your board? Maybe the support plate is sorting something in the back of your board or you overtightened the heatsink screws. Does the fan spin? How confident are you that you didn't do any mistake during the setup/installation procedure. I'm asking because you said that this is your first build.

You could also try resetting the CMOS, it may help. You should read your board's manual on how to do that and learn the location of the CMOS resetting jumper.

Finally you could try re-seating the CPU into the motherboard socket. While you are doing that check for bed pins in the socket. Maybe you weren't too careful and managed to bend a socket pin.

If the PSU is fine and you didn't do any installation mistakes then the motherboard is probably bad and you should RMA it. That said there is also a small chance that your CPU is bad and your board is OK but you cannot know for sure until you get another new motherboard. Good luck.

Can you get into the cmos? Is hard drive fdisked and formatted? Sounds like a hard drive from another laptop and drivers are crashing..
Sounds mostly like bad cpu or bios is not proper for that cpu. Google how to flash bios upon startup with usb flash drive. Reset bios by removing small round battery and short terminals 10 seconds. Make sure ram is proper speed for logic board and firmly seated until clips grab the side. Also look for hairs in connectors to ram and once there was a usb port shorting out inside ffs. Look in hole for bent pins. Almost sounds like bent pin on cpu or something shorting, bios or hdd windows software issue. Did yiu get any cpu heating paste on the cpu or gpu components on top of the cpu cpu chips? Clean with 99% alcohol and do again don't need much. Is your cpu pins bent or not in far enough or the lock turned to keep it in place after insertion. Check for any ribbon cables not in sockets properly but sounds like bent pin in a connector.

This thread is 2 weeks old with no more posts from the OP. It probably doesn't need 3 posts in a row. And a bad CPU? Heating paste? Hairs in slots? Really? :heink:

The guide I posted a link to above more than covers any technical build issues.
