I recent built a PC in mid-August (8/17), and already having major lag issues. Windows (the function when you click the windows key) function does not work.

PC: No graphics card
MB: GIGABYTE Z690 AORUS ELITE AX D5
CPU: I9-12900K
SSD: CRUCIAL 1TB P3 PLUS GEN 4 NVME
RAM: G.SKILL 32G 2X D5 6000
Case: Thermal Take
PSU: PowerSpec 650
Heatsink: Deepcool AK620
OS: windows 10

Typical Performance Utilization (from task manager), max I've seen, and I usually check when I have alot running on PC)
  • CPU: <7%
  • Mem: <50%
  • SSD: <5%
  • GPU (integrated graphics): <10%, but today it is at 28% (I also factory reset/restored my PC today)
    • CPU is currently at 2%

Timeline of issues I have had so far:
  1. Week 1: worked perfect
  2. Weeks 2-3: started xmp, worked for 2 weeks
  3. Week 4: got BSOD, changed MB, XMP didnt work still
    1. just had to reset BIOS
  4. Week 5: did a little OC, worked great for 2-3 weeks
  5. Week 7/8: computer suddenly started to lag, I can see the lag even just typing
  6. Week 10ish: windows function stopped working (I never installed windows 11
  7. Today (week 13): my integrated graphics is suddenly running at 28%
What I've done so far:
For Lag
  1. Factory reset computer
  2. Install older versions of windows 10
  3. Uninstalled a bunch of useless apps
  4. Installed windows 11, but reverted because didnt help with lag

For windows function:
  1. Disabled gaming settings
  2. everything here
  3. I know its windows function, because I programed windows key on my KB, and everything worked except windows button.

latest motherboard bios?
how many partition on the ssd? how full it is
check cpu temp?
  • My BIOS is dated from 6/7, which isnt any of the dates here, I also remember during a boot, bios said there was an update, so I did it, but it wasn't in June because I didnt get this PC until August
  • Not sure how to partition, so whatever the default is
    • Storage use is only 5%
  • CPU temps are never higher than 45 degrees C

Besides checking CPU temp as suggested by rgd1101, this could be a software issue. Have you installed any app that can be messing up things with the rest fo the system?
I dont think so, I also just factory reset the PC so outside of the normal apps/SW I only have the following:
  1. Brave (browser)
  2. Libre Office
  3. Slack
  4. VScode
  5. Chrome
  6. HWINFO64: I also only downloaded this after issues started happening so I can try and find out if one of the components were overheating
  7. TotalAV
Before the reset, I had:
  1. a few other HW checkers for temps, voltage/wattage use,
  2. RGB controller for PC case fans,
  3. Keyboard Software: but TotalAV scans files before downloads to check if theyre safe (2 separate links by the way, the software link is to a gdrive folder, which can be found in the keyboard amazon link).
    1. I also do weekly scans on my PC with Total AV
But long story short, I didnt have any new app/software that caused my PC to slow down after a few days. PC worked fine for a while. The only other thing I can think of is that I have an external power button for the PC, I know one day I hit it by accident (which partially clicked the button), the immediately proceeded to press it full way. I dont know if this could even affect the PC.

It shouldn't affect it, I mean unless something else was really going bad at the same time.

PSU: used HWINFO64 to check to see if my wattage use was close to 650, its not
Ram: used these command lines, RAM is good
CPU: installed this SW, all tests are good
SSD: good health
MB: did everything but reset CMOS & check for shorts in the PC

This is my first PC, so I dont have any spare parts either to physically isolate and test each one. If anyone has any recs on what I should test/try next, or even SW to check HW, would appreciate it.

This is while the CPU is at idle... how about while under load?

If youre asking how the temps are when a SW tester is stress testing it, I've never (know how) to do it. But I also assumed if Im not actually pushing the CPU myself during high loads (relative to my use) I should be ok.

I just checked HWINFO. My max temps on the CPU were 71 for CPU package and 73 for core max. But the average for both are under 30.

71~73°C?, runnnig what?

honestly not sure what caused it, if youre asking what SW I used, I used this. But if youre asking what apps I was using, the most I have running at 1 time would include these apps:
  1. Mail App
  2. Several windows of VS Code, my codes are not very cpu intensive at the moment
  3. Zoom session
  4. 3-4 sessions of browers with about 8 tabs each
  5. Slack
But what I do know is that the utilization is always <7%, I've checked multiple times when I was using the most amount of apps (not sure if this helps)

The best way to check temps, using hwinfo64 is to donwload something like Cinebench R20 or newer and run the test with hwinfo open at the same time (always close everything else (browser/mail/coding apps, etc.) while doing this).

Ok, so you hitted tjmax (100°C) while using Cinebench, which is not a surprise because 1. Cinebench try and use every single resource available to render the image and 2. You have a very good 2x tower cooler (but no matter the brand the 12900K, 13900K and 14900K can consume a lot of power and generate a lot of heat even using liquid cooling).

Did the PC froze while running the benchmark?
Did the PC show any slow downs/lag during the benchmark run, or was it smooth?

I dont know if it adds any value to this, but I only have 3 (from what i read cheap) case fans, and no outtake fan, just dual heatsink

I stepped away for a bit cause I saw it was 10 mins, but from the 4ish minutes I saw it (a few mins in the beginning, and a few at the end of the 10 min frame). No the pc didnt freeze, and the images werent rendering smooth, but also not lagging heavily, light lag id say. I also dont know what to expect. but it seems like based on what youre saying, the rendering should have been smooth, which it wasnt.

Also, i dont know if its straight coincidence, but only my main screen randomly blinks as I type. Never happened until I ran Cinebench.

Sorry, Im sorta out of ideas.

About the case fans, Are those the ones included in the front panel on your thermaltake case?, Are all 3 in the front panel?

If thats the case, I would consider adding a new one in the back panel as an exhaust fan, to move the hot air out of the case.

Also... Have you ever tried a different keyboard?, If you have a spare one, turn off the computer, remove the old keyboard, and put the different one in. Then turn On the PC.

yeah all 3 are the ones included with the case, and theyre all in the front, havent thought about adding a back one cause temps seem to be low in general, the the average temps are under 50c based on HWINFO. Do you think I'll still benefit from adding exhaust fan?

And yeah tried different keyboards, I think its a HW problem because I wrote some code to see how quickly my PC can process a dataset, and the outcome is very slow. I sent the code to other people with lesser HW specs than me, and they ran it in half the time.

It all depends on your usage, if you do gaming, rendering images/video, compiling code, or any medum to heavy processing task then yes, I would consider adding a fan at the back to remove the hot air out. Could this be related to your lag issues, probably not.

Just out of ideas... care to download userbenchmark (https://www.userbenchmark.com/), run the benchmark, when done it will give you a link to share, wirte it here for members to check.

Yeah my usage isn't anything crazy right now, so thats why I haven't added one yet, but couldnt hurt I guess.

I briefly mentioned this before, but I did OC the ram and CPU, but it was running stable for 2 weeks no problem. Not sure if that could be the reason.
