Hi Guys,

Just about to get parts for a new PC and I haven't done this sort of
thing for a good number of years. I wondered if anyone would care to
proffer an opinion about the following parts list, before I end up with
a load of junk that doesn't work together! :)

Motherboard Abit AA8 3rd Eye
Processor Intel Pentium 4 550 "LGA775 Prescott" 3.4GHz (800FSB) with HT
Technology - Retail (CP-059-IN)
Case Thermaltake Xaser III V2000A Super Tower Aluminium w/window
Power Supply Thermaltake Xaser Silent Purepower 480W PSU Silver
Hard Drive 1 Western Digital Raptor 10000RPM 74GB 8MB SATA OEM
Hard Drive 2 Maxtor DiamondMAX 10 300GB SATA 16MB Cache
DVD RW 1 Asus DRW-1604P 16x DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter OEM
DVD RW 2 Asus DRW-1604P 16x DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter OEM
Monitor Viewsonic VP201B 20.1ins TFT Ana/DVI Pivot-Height Adjust
1600x1200 Black
RAM Corsair 1GB DDR2 XMS2-5400 Pro TwinX (2x512MB) (MY-057-CS)
Graphics Card Sapphire Radeon X800 XT 256Mb GDDR3 PCI Express

I'm working to a budget of around 2,000 UK Pounds, so I can't go too mad
on the spec, but it's basically a PC needed for a bit of gaming and some
coding too (hence the monitor - that I'll need to be looking at all day!)

If I purchase the above from one of the major UK "parts" suppliers, such
as ebuyer or the like, is there anything else I'm going to need to get?
I'm thinking along the lines of power leads, SATA connector leads, DVI
cable, and especially if I'm going to need any additional cooling or
thermal paste type stuff for the processor.

If you've managed to stay with my witterings this far - then thanks -
and thanks for any comments or help you feel able to give.

All the best,
Pete

Sounds like a Cadillac among computers to me. Go for it. Unless
you think you might want to do 64-bit computing in another year or
so, when the Windows 64 version finally comes out and there are
64-bit programs being written. Also, if you've got the desk space
(and your floorboards can stand the weight), a good 21" CRT
monitor will be brighter and more versatile when it comes to
changing resolutions and gaming.

Hi, don't forget to make sure the PSU has 24 pin ATX connector not the old
20 pin or you will be short on power.

Why not an Athlon 64 processor instead? Many who buy a 32 bit processor
in '04 will in '05 regret that decision when great 64 bit software becomes
available.

In Doom 3, a $150 Athlon 64 3000+ socket 754 beats an $815 Pentium 4
3.2 ghz EE.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2149&p=7

It is also a great performer overall.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2065&p=6

For around the price of a P4 550, one can get an Athlon 64 3500+.

Hi Peter,
That mobo supports both raid 0 and 1. So buy yourself another one of the WD
Raptors and Raid 0 them. You will get a significant perfomance increase from
the speed of your drives.
Cheers
Neil

I'm guessing that if I was to go AMD 64, I'd go for the same motherboard
in the av8 configuration. Is the 64 3500+ the one to go for?

Also, sorry to go on about this, but will I get a basic heatsink with
the processor?

Many thanks to all who replied to this thread. Your comments were VERY
much appreciated.

All the best,
Pete

Thanks for the response, Al. Any suggestions as to a good 21" CRT?
Failing that, thanks for the thumbs up to the spec!

Thanks Chirs,

Overlooked this - I'll go for this one I reckon...

Thermaltake Xaser Silent Purepower 560W PSU Retail Boxed

.... as it has a 20 pin to 24 pin converter.

Thanks,
Pete

Thanks for the response, Neil. I like the idea of RAID'ing the drives -
but with my current budget it's gonna be a little too OTT. The plan is
just to keep the 10,000 rpm WD HDD for booting from and to use the
Maxtor one for storage.

Cheers anyway,
Pete

Yes you will get a heat sink and fan with this and they are fine, we have
built around 500 units this week around the new 775 CPU and have very good
first time results with only one board failure. by the way don't let any
body tell you different Microsoft them selves announced that no 64 bit OS
will be available before November 2006 and that was only a month ago, so by
the time that gets here the Athlon 64 you by now according to the AMD road
map will be 200% slower than chips that will be available when you finally
can get a 64 bit OS.

I think you should go back and read what Microsoft said they would
release in November 2006. Longhorn is the OS they referred to, not
Windows XP Pro x64 or Windows Server 2003 x64. Microsoft is stating 1st
half 2005 for WinXP Pro x64 and Win2003 Server x64. I believe there
have been references to Longhorn that implied it would be developed as a
64-bit OS, but that may have been speculation.

That is not true. The beta has been available for quite a while.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/upgrade.mspx

The release is scheduled for the first half of 2005.

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,117119,00.asp

The Athlon 64 chips are fantastic performers running 32 bit software,
and are basically priced based on their 32 bit performance.

With that hardware load, I might recommend switching the power supply unit
to an Antec 550 Watt True Power unit.

My 3200+ came with its own heatsink and fan, retail, so I'm
assuming the 3500+ does, also. I found the fan noisy at high
speeds. It's fine at regular speeds.

If you can stand the little wires across the screen, one with a
Trinitron tube will likely give you the best color and definition.
My brother tells me you don't even see the wires after a while.

Thanks for all your help - I placed my order this morning! Ended up
going for a more beefy psu, stuck with the p4 though and the monitor as
I haven't got the desk space for a non-tft panel.

Cheers, and many thanks.

If you get the 'Retail Box' version you will get a heat sink and fan with
the CPU. If you get the 'OEM' version you will NOT get a heat sink and fan.
The standard heat sink and fan should do the job well enough so get the
'Retail' version, unless you plan to do some overclocking. Even then the
'Retail' heat sink and fan can usually handle some mild overclocking. You
also get a manufacturers warrantee with the 'Retail' versions. The 'OEM'
version will not be warranteed by the manufacturer.
