Hi! I'm building a new PC and I wanted to keep all of my files from my hard drive (including Windows 10) but move them to my new M.2 NVMe SSD. My current motherboard is an ASRock Performance 970 and my new one is an MSI z490 Gaming Edge. How should I go about doing this? Thank you!

Solution
I'm building a new PC and I wanted to keep all of my files from my hard drive (including Windows 10)
Nope.

New system == fresh OS install.

Moving the drive, or a clone, there are 3 possible outcomes:
  1. It works just fine
  2. It fails completely
  3. It "works", but you're chasing issues for weeks/months.

Yours is a pretty major change.
#1 is the least likely to happen.

Clone the 2.5 to the m.2.
Put the m.2 on the new mobo.
Hold your breath......see if it will boot.

right, but how do i do that? I don't think I can connect the m.2 to my mobo as it's an ASRock 970 Performance doesn't support NVMe
That is not going to work.

Bite the bullet with a fresh OS install.

Also...
For the OS activation, read and do this before you change any parts:
