new pc wont pick up mic sound

i got a new cyberpower pc a few days ago. after fiddling with it i got the sound to work however no matter what i try i cant get the pc to pick up sound from my mic. i have regular earbuds a few pairs actually. i plan to use them until i get a better headset but for now its all i have. i plug them into the back of the pc and it picks up no sound. same with the front. have tried different settings and tutorials. do i need a splitter for my computer to pick up my voice or is this pc just defective?

so regular earbuds wont work on a pc without a splitter? can you link the adapter?
