Hello Guys,

My power supply(Cooler Master V1000 Gold PSU) has died after 5 years. And I am looking for new one.

Following is my part list :-
  • MSI X99A Gaming 7 Mobo
  • Intel Core i7-5960X CPU
  • G.Skill Ripjaws 4 F4-2400C15Q-32GRR DDR4-2400MHz 4x8GB RAM
  • PNY Quadro 2000 GPU
  • Samsung 850 Pro-Series 2.5" SATA III 256GB SSD
  • WD 1TB SATA WD1003FZEX 7200 RPM 3.5" HDD
  • Lite-On iHAS124-15 EU ODD,
  • TP-Link Archer TX3000E(WLAN+Bluetooth) PCIE Adapter
  • Corsair H110 280mm Liquid CPU Cooler
  • NZXT Phantom 630 Case
Few details wrt the system :-
GPU: It's quite old. Planning to replace it in coming months. Mostly by Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti (maybe Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti Gaming OC Pro). Nothing finalized here but RTX 3060 Ti looks quite solid and within the budget. So, this will add up 200W to 250W. The Gigabyte one seems to be overclocked and in one of the reviews I've seen, it consumes around 260 W. So, considering the same to be on safer side.

Overclocking : As of now, no overclocking is done. But, may be, I may do in future for CPU. So, want to keep some headroom for that.

I have done a manual calculation as well as checked online with multiple psu calculators (outervision, newgg, pcpartpicker, bequiet, seasonic, coolermaster, ...).
Of all, outervision and newegg looks to be good.

* Following are Outervision Values :-

Following are manual calculations with some reasoning behind the same :-

ComponentPower Requirement(W)
CPUw/o OC : 140, w/ OC : 170 [OC value from Tom's Hardware Review]
RAM12 (3 x 4W per 8GB) [General estimation]
HDD10 (5V x 0.68A + 12V x 0.55A) [From product technical specification]
SSD7.5 (5V x 1.5A) [From product technical specification]
Optical Drive37.5 (5V x 1.5A + 12V x 2.5A) [From product technical specification]
GPU260
Motherboard70 [General estimation]
Cooler13.5 (3.9W {for Pump} + 12V * 0.4A * 2 {for fans} ) [From product technical specification]
Fans8 [General estimation: using fans came with Case - 1 x 200mm, 1 x 140mm]
Case40 (10W {Inbuilt Card reader} + 30W {Inbuilt Fan controller device} ) [values from outervision, newegg]
Peripherals42 ( 2.5 {USB2.x} + 4.5 {USB3.x} ) * 6) [USB Standard]
Wifi10 [PCIE Standard]
Totalw/o OC : 650.5, w/ OC : 680.5

Considering 680W is required at full load, I think 1000W should be sufficient.

Please let me know your thoughts on this. :)

Also, please provide suggestions for PSUs. ;)

Hi SID,

With 750W, full load usage of 650W (no overclocking ) will be 86.67%.
Even with tier A PSU, the headroom will be less considering factors such as aging, derating of capacitors , dust, etc

One more thing is the machine is almost used 24 * 7 * 365.

With all these into picture , won't 750W be less ?

lava1789 The Cooler Master V1000 comes with a 5 year warranty. I encourage you to submit a claim to them. Even if you'd like to upgrade to a higher end PSU mfg/model, I still would recommend submitting a warranty claim for this unit as well, which is your right to do.

This one would be my pick:
PCPartPicker Part List

Unfortunately many PSUs of many great brands like Seasonic, Superflower, etc and many of the great brands itself like be quiet!, phantek, etc. are not available.
I am not sure about the reason, pandemic or not much sale or no brand awareness or what ! But this limits the options very much.

Corsair HX 1000W is available here. It is a Tier A PSU and also has quite good reviews. Better ones from Seasonic, Be quite are available from newegg via international delivery but delivery date is in November. That will be very late. So, I purchased Corsair HX 1000W.

I am now very interested in knowing about my power calculations. Are there any over or under estimates?

Also, @Flayed how did you come to 850W ?

I have that PSU. I didn't really do any power calculations but from your previous posts it seemed like you wanted a PSU with some headroom and 850W for $120 seemed pretty good for a high-quality unit.

random thought...

In 2015, a 650 watt top tier PSU seemed like the smart purchase, for any PC gaming enthusiast that might one day elect to purchase a God tier GTX 980 Ti w/ an enthusiast CPU i7-5820K. The RTX 3090 has a 350 watt TPD, and the RTX 3090 Ti is rumored to consume 450 watts, which might make 850 and 1000 watt PSUs the smart buy.

But if the future RTX 40 series rumored wattage of 550-600 for top tier GPUs turns out to be true, then 1200 or 1300 watt PSUs may soon be the norm for enthusiast builds. I find that to be almost unbelievable but it is certainly plausible.

it is a nice unit @ $120, runs my TUF 3080 Ti where a 750w Dark Power Pro 11 could not with the same level of quiet-ness.

but the OP was looking for quite a bit more headroom than what this current system actually needs so the 850w is below what they were looking for.

yeah...in last few years, power requirements are increasing quite a much.
As of now no plans to go hogh like 3080 or higher for me. At this time I think 3060 Ti should be good. But that will be for sometime later.

I think 850W will be bit neck and neck. So went for next upper one.

It's not full load all the time, is it?

No. Within the warranty period you not may expect derating. When it's dusty, just clean it.
One more thing is the machine is almost used 24 * 7 * 365.
It's powered on 24/7, not used at full load 24/7 I assume.

A motherboard doesn't consume 70w. If it does it's almost on fire. The most powerdemanding part on the motherboard is the chipset. X99 consumes ~7w.

Back of the envelope.
Cpu...140w
Gpu...200w
Total...340w

Double that equals 680w.
Rounding up equals a quality 750w minimum psu.
Bigger won't hurt.
