new processor and maybe motherboard?

I would like to upgrade my pc to play some of the upcoming titles like Far Cry Primal. To do that I need a better processor and I don't think my motherboard could support a newer one. I would like your guys help and suggestions please.

System Specs:

Operating system - windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

Graphics card - 2047MB NIVIDIA Geforce GTX 750ti

Motherboard - MSI 760GM-P23(FX) (MS-7641) (CPU 1)

Processor - AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 (4cpus) ~3.0 GHZ

8.00 GB Dual Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz RAM

Direct x 11

As of right now my budget is a thousand dollars.

If primarily for gaming, would look at the 6600K or 4690K as your CPU and work from there depending on what you decide. The K model CPUs will provide a good lifespan and eith will be good for a few years

Sorry for being bothersome, but don't I have to get a new motherboard? My current processor is AMD, so does that mean I have to get a new motherboard that supports an intel chipset?

Yes, would decide on the CPU first, then go to mobo, cooler, DRAM etc - have you looked into any particular components that interest you?

I wish I did my homework. I would like to switch from Amd to intel, but I do not know what motherboard would be best compatible. Ram and cooling is not as big as a concern as I never gave it much thought.

Asus makes an A model for both the Z170 and the Z97 - I have builds on both platforms and went up a step or the Hero model on both platforms (Z97 in sig) the Z170 Hero I have paired with a 6600K
