I upgraded my PSU in hopes of being able to use a new GPU (AMD Radeon RX 460 2GB) in my ancient Desktop. The current PSU I use is 300W. The PSU I bought is 550W and when I powered it on, it stayed powered on for about 1 minute and then powered off and did not turn back on. It might be because of a number of things.

1. Too outdated
2. Faulty PSU
3. Too much power (if that is even possible?)
4. CPU gets too hot

This issue happened to me except the cpu fan span for a second and then did not turn back on. When ever you upgrade psu, you have to make sure all power is drained from the system as a increase power supply is increase power the motherboard did not see before. In my case I fired both my motherboard and my new psu. I had a warenty on both though, so I was lucky. I just hope you did not just suffer the same fate. I would test your motherboard and psu.

I have the 300W PSU in and the system still works

Will try this when I get a replacement PSU since I returned it today.
