New Rig! £600-£1000

Hello all! I'd hope you guys could help me with quite a complicated buy.
I'm not entirely sure if buying at this point in the year is a good thing, or if I should wait ... or. But after playing Battlefield on medium at lower resolution i'd love to see how the game can actually look!

I'm basically after buying 3/4 of a PC, minus the Powersupply or Graphics card - Unless you guys feel they'll bottleneck it in some way.

Approximate Purchase Date: Within 3 weeks (leaning towards 2nd or 3rd week)


Budget Range: £600-£1000 After Rebates


System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming Entirely with a side of Movies!


Parts Not Required: Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor, Powersupply and Possibly Graphics Card


Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Scan.co.uk would be my preferred site, usually the best all round?


Country of Origin: England


Parts Preferences: No real preferred prefence.


Overclocking: Yes


SLI or Crossfire: No


Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080


Additional Comments:
The reason I put the Powersupply and Graphics card as optional 'Not Required Parts' is that I have literally just bought a Corsair 600w this week - I hope that does not complicate things . The Graphics Card i'm not entirely sure of, i'm using a 5870 which is OC'd and has served me well - THAT well i've even voided the warrenty with a custom fan ontop it it! ...
I am willing to be swayed!

Side note:
I put the price as £600-£1000 as i'm not entirely sure whether I need to spend that much, i'd like not too but I have no clue what i'm buying

Just buying a second 5870 might let you max out the game. Or a new GPU altogether.

Oh so you would not recommend at all upgrading my entire pc, just one or two components - would I be able to crossfire another 5870 with just 600w?

You don't need two 580s for 1080p.

Ooh, I have no clue!
My original idea was to sell everything in my current PC except the powersupply and the graphics card and build around that - or sell the card aswell and build and entirely new PC with my current powersupply ...
I apologize if I didn't get that across, unless thats a terrible idea!

If you want to do it then do it, I'm just saying your system is reasonably powerful and if I were you I wouldn't buy a new system just yet. Your CPU is only one generation old, it's gonna last another year.

What would you suggest Finneous? A 6970 gpu or a larger upgrade like 384-BiT and buy one 580. I'm not entirely keen on a new PSU since i've literally just bought one, no offence!

It might be good to try and sell your 5870 and buy a 6970, that'll run on your new PSU. It should be enough to max any game at your resolution.

Yeah the 580 is a mighty board but it's also very expensive.

5870 to a 6970 would'nt be alot better imo.

I think you're right. So I'm gonna change my suggestion to buying another 5870 and a new PSU if the current one can't keep up.

Aaah I understand 384-BiT .. Well i'm glad you both are telling me not to upgrade. Although i'd of assumed a whole new build and not just a graphics card upgrade! Since BF3 and Skyrim are soon to release I was under the impression I needed a whole new PC. Now its too decide whether to go for a 6970 or a 580!

You could get a second 5870 for 200-ish but I'm afraid your 600W PSU might not be up to the task. So a 5870 plus new PSU is going to be £300-ish and a 580 £350+. Tough choice really 😛

I'm barely tech savvy as it is, and unless i'm mistaken (probaly am) theres more things that go wrong with CF than right?
I've literally just bought the 600w Corsair, buying another would be a bit iffy. ><!

Umm, would you say that would have more of an impact in performance than a single 580?
And do you think that would last me for another 1-2 years like the 580 would? (I'd assume)

Yes the Crossfire should be more powerful.
