Hey All I am new here and it has bee a while since i have build a new rig and looking to speed up my encoding for VOB files using Handbreak for viewing on my PS3. I my current rig takes about 1-2 hours per movie and want to know if anyone is in the same boat as me. This is what I currently have:

THERMALTAKE W0049RUC SILENT PUREPOWER 680W
THERMALTAKE CL-P0114 BIG TYPHOON COPPER BASE COOLING FAN COOLING FAN
AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4200
ASUS A8N-SLI PREMIUM
CORSAIR TWINX2048-4000PT
BFGR79256GTOCE GEFORCE 7900 GT 256MB DDR3 PCI-E W/HDTV & DUAL DVI
THERMALTAKE ARMOR VA8000SWA

What I am looking at is:
AMD Phenom X4 quad core 9650
ASUS M3N78 PRO
KINGSTON hyper x KHX8500D2T1K2/4G 4gb kit (2gb x 2) match pair pc28500 1066mhz cl5 5-5-5-15 240-pin ddr2 dimm w/heat spreader

Looking to reuse:
CPU Fan
Video Card

This is not goin to be used for anyting but Handbreak encoding...and I do not want to spend a whole alot of money on this upgrade...

You could probably get 800mhz memory instead of 1066, also a 32 bit OS won't use the 4th gig of memory. As for the processor, I don't see why you wouldn't go with a Phenom 9950 BE or 9850 BE, at the moment, both cheaper then the 9650 and will perform encoding faster then the 9650. As far as I'm aware of, the 9950 is just clocked a little higher then the 9850 but essentially the same processor.

Thanks I was just looking at prices from MWAVE.COM. I thought that I was reading that 32bit XP only supports 4GB of ram but I thoghht that was a bogus post. I have 64bit XP Pro but I do not think that Handbreak supports 64Bit...

You can't go wrong having a 4th gig a ram, but the 32 bit just won't use it. Those prices on the 9950 and 9850 may be special after Christmas sales but I know newegg regularly had the 9850 at $160 which is still cheaper then the 9650. You might even be able to catch a great deal on memory with an after Christmas sale.

can always get a intel machine, they win pretty much all the encoding tests anyways *shrug* but either company make good products

Why not buy a Q9550. . . you'll get 99.9999% of the performance of the 1500$ processor.

Better Mobo too.
