New rig to replace my 5 year old one

Hello,

I'm in the point where I've started to assemble a new rig to replace my current old one.

Current setup:
AMD Phenom II 1055T
Ati Radeon HD 7850 2gb
2x4gb 1600mhz ddr3

So far, I've decided to go with the new i7 skylake 6700K just for the longevity, compared with a matching MB and DDR4 memory.

The problem I have, is that I can't decide on the GPU. First I was thinking of the EVGA GeForce GTX 960 FTW 4gb, but thought that it might not get me much milage and has to be replaced farely soon. Then i decided on the same card, but the 970 version. At this point I watched a few gtx 970 vs r9 390 benchmark videos and it got me thinking about the ATI line of cards. My two last cards were ATI so I was originally going to go with Nvidia for a change. Furthermore, the ATI cards have DX12 support, as compared to the Nvidia line cards that don't have it.

So, should i go perhaps with R9 390 8gb (and maybe in the future with 2x for crossfire) OR wait until the new Nvidia Pascal cards come out?

Money is basically no issue, but i'd like to keep the whole rig under 2k, closer to 1.5k if possible.

NVIDIA 970's have DX12. I'd recommend the 970s over the r9 390x due to power efficiency and better overclocking headroom. An OC'd 970 can easily catch a 390x. With a little bit of patience, I would recommend waiting for pascal, since it's only a few months away, if you can wait.

Tough it out until this Summer with your current rig, and wait for the new 14-/16nm video cards.

Thanks for the replies so far. A Few things to point out: I will primarily be playing at 1440p and was thinking that investing in a card that lasts atleast 2+ years and then if the need rises, buy another one and link it up via Crossfire/SLI. On the other hand, if a single GPU is a smarter choice, maybe i should strech the budget a little and maybe even think about a 980?

Buy a R9 390 / 970 now and another one at some point < > Buy the 980 (?)
