so im moving into a house with a few college buddies in about a month, and we need a router, its a fairly good size house with 3 floors, I like to game quite a bit and all of us agree internet connection is our number one priority, what would be a good router to consider thats going to be good for a 3 story house? I heard this one is good http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTN66U/

Does anyone have recommendations?

You would be best off with one main router and many other extensions. A close friend of mine lives in a huge house, and he has one main router and probably two or so extenders for each floor, and it ends up working quite well to make sure that there is connection all over the house.

It sounds like a rented house, but if at all possible, if you can run an main router from the middle floor, and run cables 1 up to the top floor, and 1 down to the bottom, then you can add routers for each level of the house, no worrying about interference from structure that way...

I have a similar issue ... our house is two stories, but the way the house is constructed, we barely get a signal from the router in the study into the master bedroom located on the same floor. Since the house was built in 2008, they ran ethernet all through it. So what I did is use a D-Link DIR-655 as the main router in the study. I have a switch in the closet where all the ethernet cables merge. I then placed an Access Point in the master bedroom, and two rooms upstairs (the D-Link DAP-1522).

However, I am thinking it is time to upgrade the router, but this router works great with the set up I have (i.e., the 3 access points to expand coverage).

Any thoughts on the best way to upgrade the router to one of the latest versions, and any idea as to what type of access points I should use? As noted, all access points are hard wired to the main router via the switch in the closet.

Thanks.

Thanks for your message. Although I am subscribed to this thread, I never got the notice that this was posted.

Essentially, I want something that is going to last awhile, so, because I've had the D-Link set up for years, I am not opposed to spending a few hundred on a network that works well. As noted, I use the DIR-655 as my router, have a switch in the closet where all the ethernet cables merge, and then have three APs throughout the home in order to ensure coverage (the DAP-1522). This solution has worked well for years, but my family is now complaining about slow speeds, etc. I am not sure what's going on with the hardware, but I feel it's time to upgrade.

Perhaps instead of three APs, I can get a new router (perhaps with the latest standard), and maybe two APs (even if north of $250). I just want a solution that will provide high speed access across my home network and not leave dead spots in the house. Being in Houston, our house is wrapped in some shielding that is supposed to be a barrier to the heat. This also has the effect of blocking wireless signals fairly well.

Any suggestions for a central router and a few APs would be appreciated. I think I can convince my wife to agree to a decent investment in money if I can convince her that we likely won't need to do this again for 4-5 years.

Many thanks.
