So recently my family got a new ASUS router even though our old netgear router was working perfectly fine. I also use an extender as it does not usually reach my room. Ever since we installed the new router, my pc internet has been absolutely horrible. I cannot enjoy any sort of game without my ping going from 40 to 200+ every single second. I would even use speedtest.net and speedtestIO and they both would say I have 2 ping with like 50 upload and download speeds. I have no idea how to fix this problem, I tried looking it up and many just say it is a high latency problem but I have no knowledge of this kind of stuff so I am just stuck.

Solution
Where is the extender placed....I hope you did not put it in your room. It needs to be placed where it can get good signal from the main router and still be able to send the signal to the remote room. Takes a lot of trial and error.

Many things cause this which is why they recommend you never play games on wifi. It is likely interference of some kind. Most times it is coming from outside your house from say you neighbors also using wifi.

The new router might be running on different radio chanels or the repeater may have moved from 2.4 to 5 band or the reverse. Also if the new router is a lower end wifi6 router many times those are slower than the a older mid level 802.11ac router when they run in 802.11ac mode.

This is going to be hard because of having a repeater in the path. It is a matter of changing radio channels and hoping to get lucky. Generally set the band to 20mhz will reduce you chances of interference but it will also greatly reduce the top speed for all users. The transfer speed does not matter
as much for games but other people might notice.

The long term solution should be to avoid using wifi completely for games. Consider MoCA if you have coax cables or powerline networks. Both work much better for online games than wifi

i did not put the extender in my room but i put it somewhere in between where my router is and my room location and the app for the extender says the distance is good. Also for the moCA would i need an ethernet to be hooked up to my computer as well? i have tried using the ethernet outlet in my room and it doesn’t work for some reason i cannot remember.

Maybe spend some time and see if you can figure out how to fix the wall ethernet port. It could just be that the other end is not plugged into anything.

You generally plug a moca adpater into your PC with a ethernet. I guess if you just want wifi you could move the extender back to your room and plug it into a moca adapter as a AP. Then the wifi would only have a couple feet to go in the same room. The moca will still be much faster since the newer moca adapters can run full gigabit speeds.
I am not sure if they make moca adapters with wifi built in, they might I have never needed moca and wifi.
