Hi, I just assembled a new Ryzen PC, but with an old GTX 960 from my previous one, but it does not boot. I tried a lot of things so far. Here is the rig:
  • AMD Ryzen 5600x
  • Asus TUF Gaming B550 Plus
  • 2x16GB RAM T-Force Vulcan Z
  • WD Black SN850 1TB
  • Corsair RM550x PSU
  • Old evga GTX 960 SSC
First of all, I switched to another GT 1030 GPU card and it worked perfectly, so that points me to the GPU being the issue. Other factors:
  • Q-LED indicates "VGA" is the problem
  • I updated to the latest non-beta BIOS using the GT 1030
  • Tried to clear CMOS
  • Tried another PSU cable supplying the PCIe power
  • Tried my old PSU to supply power to my GPU while the rest runs with the new
  • Tried the other PCIe slot
  • Tried to force the main PCIe slot to GEN 3 in the BIOS
  • Tried without a GPU
  • Put back my GPU to my old PC to confirm that it still works.
Is there any known incompatibilities between this graphic card and my rig? Any other idea?

There has been some great progress on my side: it now works! I don’t know how I did it, but here are the steps I did that finally got it working for future reference:
  • I did a BIOS update on my graphic card that enabled DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4 (available on nvidia web site, from 2018) thinking that it could not hurt.
  • It gave me the idea that there could be different result between DisplayPort and HDMI
  • I hooked the computer with an HDMI cable. It did not work, but there was no longer the QLED saying VGA was at fault
  • I hooked another computer monitor to HDMI and to my astonishment, it worked. But still not good on my main monitor
  • I started on my old monitor and switch the cable to my new one while live and it worked. It then finally worked while starting up on HDMI
  • After several tries, it finally worked natively with DisplayPort, even on boot.

It now works flawlessly on DisplayPort on my main computer and monitor. I could not be happier. It still isn’t clear what could have caused the issue, I don’t feel I did anything except the BIOS update which didn’t immediately give results.
