New Samsung 840 low read IOPs?

Hi everyone,
This is my first post on the forum so hello to all. I've just bought my very first SSD, a Samsung 840 as I've seen some pretty good reviews and it was in my price range. I installed it as the instructions said, used the Samsung Disk Cloning software from their website to clone my old OS drive and everything seems ok. Ran a benchmark using Samsung's Magician software though and I only seem to get read IOP score of about 7500 whereas my write score is 23000. The same results came using AS SSD. I know my MB has only sata II and no AHCI support. Is this right or is something wrong with the drive or my set up? I get about 250mbps read and 130mbps write which I think is about right with sata II but as the drive has a claimed 83000 read IOP score, I guess I expected around half that. Any input would be greatly received.

The lack of SATA 3 and AHCI is very likely to be the cause of the lower score. I wouldn't worry too much about it though. It's not the speeds that make an SSD so fast, it's the low accesstime.

Yeah I would say that is due to no ACHI and Sata II. Dont worry so much about Benchmarks though, it should be noticeably faster than a HDD anyway.

Thanks for the quick answers. Would the lack of sata 3 and AHCI not affect the write IOP score just as much? Sorry for my ignorance. I'm looking to upgrade my CPU/motherboard to one with sata 3 in the next few months and want to make sure i don't miss the chance to return the drive if it is faulty.

I'm pretty sure that your low IOPS are due to your motherboard. The Samsung 840 has a 3 year warranty so you should be able to return it if you are getting the same low scores on your new motherboard.
