New SD in system, old HDD now not working!

Hi guys,

My first ever post here, so please be kind!

Recently I purchased a Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD to upgrade my system. I previously had Windows running on a 750GB normal Hard Drive.

Now I have Windows running on my SSD, and I was planning on using the old hard drive as a storage device for things like games and pictures and any applications that I didn't use often.

Now I have an issue where when the old Hard Drive is plugged in, the computer boots fine and the hard drive is even showing when I load up My Computer. My issue however is that when I start running games/applications on the drive, it works for a while, then I hear two "clicking" noises coming from the drive itself, the game/application I am running shuts down and the drive dissapears from My Computer.

I have read articles similar to mine about peoples drives not showing properly on boot-up, however mine seems different in that I can actually access it for a while until the PC seems to give up with it an get rid. I have tried using a different SATA cable and a different SATA port to no avail. My guess now would possibly be a too weak PSU, however unfortunately I don't have a more powerful unit to test this idea.

Before I go ahead and purchase a new PSU, I would be extremely grateful if you guys have had any experiences or can guide me in any way.

Here are my PC specs;

Processor: Intel Core i5-2380P @ 3.10GHz 3.4GHz
RAM: 8GB
GPU: AMD Radeon 7850HD
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, Seagate Barracuda 750GB
PSU: CiT 750W PSU

Admittedly I know this is not the best system you've ever seen and after doing a little research apparently that PSU sucks, but I am a student on a budget!

EDIT: Just to add, the PSU makes an awful whirring noise, kinda like a backward-and-forward noise that has begun in the past few weeks, a little bit before I installed the SSD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dan

From what you're describing it sounds like the actual drive may be on the fritz. Possibly it's hitting bad sectors in the file tables causing it to become unresponsive after being accessed.

First off, I'd back up anything you can't afford to lose. Then try running chkdisk with the scan for bad sectors box checked. That should let you know if it's the drive failing. If it does have bad sectors, scrap it and get another one. It's not worth losing important data for the cost of a hdd.

Thanks DataMedic.

I am running chkdsk now to see if it's the drive. The drive was absolutely fine before I installed my SSD, kinda hoping its not my hard drive although everything is backed up already which is good.

I just ran CHKDSK and it came back with this result, does this mean the drive is faulty?
