I used Sea Tools to check my new "Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4TB ext. HDD". It passed short DST, but failed short Generic, which I attempted again, after readjusting cables. It failed short Generic again. Then I conducted a Long Generic, which lasted for nearly 35 hours, and the HDD passed this test. Thereafter, when I did short Generic, it passed. Also, it passed short DST again. Here is the SeaTools log file entry ----

--------------- SeaTools for Windows v1.4.0.6 ---------------

Model: BUP BL
Serial: NA9FR5ER
Firmware: 0304
Short DST - Started 7/19/2018 23:40:42
Short DST - Pass 7/19/2018 23:42:08
Short Generic - Started 7/19/2018 23:45:17
Short Generic - FAIL 7/19/2018 23:45:57
SeaTools Test Code: E0C66EC0
Short Generic - Started 7/19/2018 23:48:47
Short Generic - FAIL 7/19/2018 23:49:26
SeaTools Test Code: E0C66EC0
Long Generic - Started 7/19/2018 23:51:36
Long Generic - Pass 7/21/2018 10:41:49
Short Generic - Started 7/21/2018 11:05:22
Short Generic - Pass 7/21/2018 11:09:50
Short DST - Started 7/21/2018 11:15:35
Short DST - Pass 7/21/2018 11:15:57

I could not understand what just happened with this HDD.
Specifically, 2 questions. First, Since my HDD failed short Generic originally, but passed it later, is my HDD OK? Or should I return it?
Second, is it normal for a 4TB Seagate Backup Plus Portable HDD to take ~35 hours to complete a Long Generic? Or is that also indicating bad HDD health?
Please advise.

SkyNetRising, Here is the HDTune Health as asked by you. Also attached are the screenshots from Windows Check Disk, as was advised on the seagate help page.

In the meantime, I should tell that I disconnected the drive (properly), after conducting the earlier mentioned Long Generic test (that the drive passed). Thereafter, I reconnected the HDD after a few hours, and again did the tests using SeaTools. Like at the start, it passed the Short DST, but again it failed the Short Generic, twice. So, i conducted Windows Check Disk, as per Seagate help page advice, and then HDTune Health as per SkyNetRising's advice.
P.S. - As soon as the HDD enters inner scan during Short Generic test, it fails. Please advise

Thanks for replying SkyNetRising.
Actually I had just bought this drive for my system's backup. It was a big investment for me, so I was just checking if the HDD was fine or not. Just wanted to be sure before transferring the data.
So, I should not bother about it repeatedly failing the short Generic test, since it passed the long generic without a glitch, and also HDTune Health shows positive results. Right??

Here is the HD tune error scan showing 2 bad sectors.

However Windows Checkdisk and SeaTools Long Generic Test did not show any problems whatsoever for this same drive. Pics attached earlier.

Also, CrystalDisk Info for this drive also showed no problems. Here is the image

No such thing on modern hard drives. "Software bad blocks" haven't existed since the days of Windows 3.1 and 95.

The drive just hasn't caught the bad sectors yet because the OS hasn't attempted to write data there triggering the event when it'll realize it can't use those sectors and try to remap them.

Unfortunately, Seagate won't warranty it until the SMART is triggered as bad. The drive might still be OK, at least a just a backup drive. That having been said, Seagate hard drives are complete crap these days. I'd avoid them like the plague. Stick with HGST drives or Toshiba instead. You'll be much better off.

After searching on Internet, I stumbled upon this webpage.
https://superuser.com/questions/1114361/seatools-short-generic-test-fails-but-long-generic-test-passes

Please take a look. Also I'm attaching the screenshots of the webpage.

In the last image i.e. View4, kindly see the highlighted part. After reading this, I decided to check it myself. And ran the SeaTools on the same HDD on Windows 10. Here are the 2 comparisons:

Win7

Win10
NA9_FR5_ER_Sea_Tools_Win10_report_23072018.jpg

So, I think it answers as to why my absolutely new HDD was failing Short Generic but passing short DST and Long Generic in SeaTools for Windows 7. In Windows 10, the HDD passed all 3 SeaTools test without any issues in one go.

Some problem with the Win7 OS itself. Others please take note of this issue with Win7.

Thank you all for helping me.
