New Seasonic PSU melted a SATA cable

I just got a Seasonic X series gold rated PSU from Amazon to replace my Corsair CX750M. When I got everything plugged in, it turned on for a few seconds, turned off and then back on again. Almost immediately I could smell something burning so I turned it back off. After checking some of the cables i found that it was the one plugged into the DVD drive. I took some pictures of the cables: http://imgur.com/a/GhK3g

The part of the SATA cables that goes in to the mother board is fine, but the wider one (whatever those are called) is pretty warped. The ends that go into the PSU don't seem to be damaged at all. Should probably mention that I didn't replace that wide cable with the one that came with the new PSU. It was routed under the motherboard so I couldn't be bothered to take it out, and I thought those were more or less universal, noob mistake maybe? Every other cable I used are the ones that came with the PSU, and I've actually been using it for 2 days since this happened with no issues. Basically I don't know if I should be worrying about it doing that again or not. Was it my fault for not using a new cable?

My build:
MSI Gaming 3 Z97 mobo
MSI gtx 970 4gb
i5 4690k OC'd to 4.4ghz
Seasonic 80+ Gold 850w X series
Kingston HyperX Fury Black ram 8gb

Solution
The modular cables are not "universal" between PSU's sometimes not even the same from variations of the same model.

Warning, digression follows: I recently RMA'd my SeaSonic X650 (SS-650KM). Per SeaSonic's instructions, no cables were sent. I received an X-650 (SS-650KM-3) in return with a set of 24 pin cables and 8 pin EPS cable, it was obvious that my old cables would not work in the new PSU even though they are both X650's (and after all the time I spent sleeving that first set)

Back to topic, replace the SATA cable (the wide part is the SATA power connector) with one of the SeaSonic cables and see if your DVD drive survived the event

Solution
The drive is pretty much done I think, the outlet for the power connector on it is warped just like the cable is. It was really hard to unplug the fried cable, actually.

On the flip side (gotta be something to get out of this) optical drives are decreasing in popularity, if you're not dependent on the optical drive, take it out, put the front panel bay cover back on and simply play off it's absence "Nah, I don't have an optical drive, no one uses those anymore"

Might just use this as an excuse to get a blu-ray one.

So it seems like this was just my mistake and not the PSU?
