Hi

The recent demise of my gaming laptop has bought me back to desktops but not having built one for a while I thought I would ask the collective for assistance as it is a fun minefield of model numbers and parts.

I have about £800 to spend and am in the UK. I'm not looking for a super gamer but mainly to play 7daystodie, Deep rock galactic, empyrion galactic survival and ark as the sort of game range. Also with a little bit of future wiggle room.

This is where I have got so far

Seagate Barracuda 1Gb 2.5 HDD
(This I already have)

Let me know your thoughts, changes, few quid more or less?

Cheers

This should get you more for your money.

Thanks velocityg4 for that it's really helpful, can I ask why the RTX 2060 over the GTX 1660ti? Just interested really as they seem about the same spec but the TI is about £50 cheaper.

Is the extra £ justified?

Avoid the WD Green SSD. Sub par performer in the SSD world.

thanks I though that might be the case velocityg4 s suggestion sounds good.

The i5-8400 will come with an adequate cpu cooler. No need for the zalman.
Buy the i5-9400F processor.
It is slightly faster and cheaper.

The F suffix does not include integrated graphics but you will be using a discrete graphics card.
It also comes with a cooler.

You motherboard supports optane devices.
Consider a 16gb m.2 pcie unit which will act as a cache for your HDD.
I could not find it on scan, but here it is on US newegg:

On the SSD, I like Samsung EVO for performance and reliability.

It's approximately a 5% system cost increase for a 10% to 15% gaming performance increase. By sheer numbers. You are getting a better cost to performance ratio. I couldn't make a judgement as to whether it is worth it to you. That money could buy an aftermarket CPU cooler and bump the motherboard quality up a notch for better overclocking, one new game, fifty cheap old games in Steam bundles or a nice gaming mouse.:D

Sounds like a plan, I will probably get a 512gb m.2 SSD as most of my non speed specific stuff will sit on the HDD so I won't need a 1tb and I will probably go for a SF PSU as that case is a little snug for ATX PSUs apparently so that will drop the price down a bit anyway.

I suppose i am hesitant as i have not been into the AMD world for a while, they went through a bit * phase about ten years back when Intel upped their game and change can be scary especially when spending £800 ;)

It's just another x86 CPU. Which gets better performance for the price. If you aren't in a rush. The 3000 series comes out in a few weeks. Although finding a B450 with an updated BIOS may be a pain.

I'd think about that SSD. Games take up a lot of space. There's always some new game around the corner which may interest you. Once you load a game off an SSD. Youll never want to wait on a HDD again.
