I'm having a lot of graphics problems with my new skylake build.
The components are a Maximus VIII Hero mobo, I7 6700k, 16gb Corsair DD4 (2400mhz 2x8GB Sticks), EVO SSD, WD Black HDD, and EVGA 850w GOLD Modular PSU.
I initially built this sans GPU for cost, and used it for light gaming with a Bravia TV (1360x768 res).
I installed win 7 during the build, then straight away upgraded to windows 10 before installing any programs. This was a nightmare I'm reluctant to repeat so I'd really rather not do a reinstall. If I have to, I'll buy a new SSD and to a separate install so If we can avoid that for the time being I'd be grateful.
Light gaming was fine with titles like SKYRIM, COD MW2, FALLOUT 4, ARKHAM CITY using intergrated HD 350 graphics while I saved up for a GPU.
Once I installed a GPU the problems started.
The first card was a cheap MSI GTX 970. This had stability problems force closing games so I returned it.
The second card was a Strix GTX 960. This seemed to work.. But was very laggy and not a great improvement on integrated graphics so I returned it too. Really the fan spinning all the time was the deal breaker (I want a quiet system)
Third card was a Strix GTX 970. I could not get acceptable frame rates with this card in Alien Isolation or GTA V, even lowering quality settings, So I ultimately returned it.
The card I have now is a GTX 980 TI, and I'm having very similar problems to the 970..
On ultra settings, I was getting around 40 average FPS in GTA V, and Alien Isolation. After playing with nvidia control settings, in game settings and reinstalling Motherboard and GPU drivers (clean with DUU) the quality has paradoxically got worse.. 25-35 fps.
If I lower settings right down to minimum in games like GTA V, I can get 50fps average, but when I move my mouse the movement is very stuttery, and occasionally it will frame drop right down to 20.
Just about every game I try is having problems, and in case of a few, integrated graphics were performing better.
I just can't seem to put my finger on what it is and I'm starting to pull my hair out.
If anyone can offer any suggestions or ask me to provide any further details to help debug this I'd be very appreciative.
I sold all my gaming hardware to build my rig and I'm on the cusp of selling this rig and buying it back 🙁
I have one benchmark in case it helps. 3d MARK 11 - 12854. Supposedly better than 85% of all results. At the moment I don't quite believe it.
