Brand new build:
MSI Z170a Gaming M5
M.2 SSD 250gb
Intel I7 6700k
GeForce GTX 970 4gb
Windows 10 home

Ok so I built this and installed Windows 10. Everything seemed to go smooth till I tried to click around in Windows 10. I could click the start menu but couldn't click anything in it. I can still use my keyboard to tab through but not the mouse? Also other applications freeze sometimes and won't let me click anything. But if I let it sit for a while it sometimes lets me. Very strange. Could it be a setting I didn't click in my bios before installing? I updated my bios and all drivers. Ran Windows update. Tried resetting with the media creation tool. Still the same problems. Anyone know what might be happening? I have tried Microsoft tech support and they haven't been able to help yet. You get a gold star if you can get my expensive new PC working

Solution

So I have been lazy but I found out that it was my cheap mouse and keyboard by thermaltech. I tested everything replaced things changed drivers. Then I went to the basics and clean installed then used an old mouse I borrowed. No issues. So I went out and bought a new corsair k70 and m65 and everything is doing great. So as a new pc builder I learned to check everything.
You should start with component examination. Check components for overheating and etc. I would i as well install a different OS in order to see if win 10 is malfunctioning. Go with win 7 or Ubuntu and see how those OS are performing.

I don't think it is a hardware issue. In the bios everything looks good. All showing up and running at normal temps. I think it is probably just Windows being dumb. But I didn't know if there was something I should have done in my bios before I installed Windows?

May I assume your mouse is USB connected?

Z170 chipset supports USB 3.1. That takes updated chipset drivers which were likely not included with windows 10.
Your motherboard cd should have appropriate ones, as should the intel support site.

Or... can you use a ps2 mouse?

Are you using the usb2.0 or 3.0 ports?

Hey mate. I think this is not windows problem becouse i have the same problem. I think its driver errors from intel chipcet. I got same problem too and i have tried windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10
