I have installed a new sound card that is reported as working BUT it is not
recognised as an Audio device and so the neither the speakers nor the mike
work.

Information:
============================================
Environment: Windows XP (upgraded form Windows ME)
Control Panel ==> Sounds and Audio devices ===> Sounds and Audio Device
Properties
===> Volume Tab ==> reports No Audio device
===> Audio Tab ==> reports No Playback device
reports No Recording device
YET
===> Hardware Tab ==> reports CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio device
the Properties for which
indicate that
it is working.
============================================

Is the above information enough?

I have tried several soundcards ===> Same problem

In all other respects XP is up-to date, and all other software seems to work
fine.

I'd prefer to NOT wipe the C: drive and start again.

Can anyone please suggest how I can get XP to establish the connection
between the "working" sound card and Windows XP's sound system?

Thanks...

First thing to do is to boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, and
delete/remove ALL items having to do with the sound card and/or audio
devices. Reboot and Windows will re-detect the hardware and either have the
drivers available to install or ask for the CD.

I'm guessing that the upgrade from ME to XP did not successfully update
and/or install the correct audio drivers.

When you say XP is up-to-date does that incude your actually going to the
web site for the sound card and downloading the latest XP drivers? Don't
install any audio or video drivers from the WindowsUpdate web site as they
are usually not as up-to-date as those drivers posted on the respective
manufacturers web site.

Thanks for your quick response Jerry.

The soundcard BTW is a Creative SB Live! value.

1) I booted in safe mode. And deleted ALL devices under
Sound, video and game controllers.

2) Upon reboot the sound card itself and its game port
were the only devices recognised; BUT NO Audio Codecs,
Legacy Audio Drivers, and so on.

3) No joy...

4) Installed what seem to be the latest driver
Soundblaster Live DrvUni-Pack(ENG).exe

5) No joy...

6) Tried an AudioExcel card that works in another
computer ===> Same result ===> No Joy

Any other ideas?

Thanks...
