Question New SSD, fresh Win10 install, won't boot (BIOS, MBR)

Just did a fresh install of Win10 22H2 on a new Crucial MX500 1TB SSD. My motherboard (ASRock P55 Extreme4) is old and only supports BIOS/MBR.

The install seemed to go fine, but now it won't boot - just get "Reboot and select proper boot device". The BIOS sees the SSD, and I can boot if I use the USB install drive.

Already tried:

  • Rufus with MBR/BIOS settings
  • bootrec /fixmbr
  • Double checked BIOS settings (AHCI, etc.)

Any ideas?

There are 10 SATA ports, did you plug into one of the first 6 ports?
  • - 6 x SATA2 3.0 Gb/s connectors, support RAID (RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 10, RAID 5 and Intel® Rapid Storage), NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug functions
  • - 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors by Marvell SE9128, support hardware RAID (RAID 0 and RAID 1), NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug functions
  • - 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors by Marvell SE9123/9120, support NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug functions
