I have decided to build the following system with money saved and left over from christmas, the question I would like answered is in this system which AMD XP chip would be the best for ocing in this setup:

Mobo: Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Memory: 2 512MB PC-3500 from OCZ with EL
HD: 80GB Western Digital Caviar w/8MB buffer
GPU: Radeon 9700 Pro
Case: Chieftech Server Tower DX-01BD w/ENERMAX EG465P-VE(FMA) 431W PSU
Heatsink: Thermalright SLK-800

I plan on using this setup with the case using all of the fans. Any help would be appreciated, thank you. Sorry im a newb to OCing.

You will need a CPU with the T-bred B core if you want to overclock with the multiplyer, with is strongly recommended. All CPUs from 2400+ and up have the new core. Perhaps the best CPU for the money would be 2400+, otherwise the 2700+, probably some better, but more expensive.

A side note~
the asus board u got isnt the best oc board..its got same flimsy at best vcore adjustments. I dont think that youll have an issue with that, since ur only usin air cooling, but keep in mind that a low limit on vcore (unless u mod it) is low for obvious reasons. GOod luck tho :)

Nice memory purchase too;

The XP2400+ is a good OC'er. And if you want to start with 333Mhz FSB dafault (which would be nice with that board and memory) you can take the XP2600+ 333Mhz FSB or the XP2700+.

I must say I believe in the A7N8X as a great board. ok, it can't handle the extreme OCing, but still you can do quite a bit with 211fsb. I believe it is both stable and good. A good choise with this system if you ask me.

Hey Svol, how does one overclock the XP's without pump and reservoir? XP's, even the T-Bred B's, surely aren't made for overclocking without water are they? And if they are, which is the best board and memory to use? Also what is the maximum multiplier setting of the latest Asus and Epox boards (KT400/nForce).

From the Seas we come to the Seas we return.

You can OC the latest XP without watercooling with not that much problems... due to the die shrink the heat that is generates is not much more then the XP2100+ Palomino. If you use a good HSF like the Volcano 7+, Alpha PAL8045 or Swiftech MCX-462 with a good fan you can OC them to a decent speed.
I don't know what the latest mulitplier settins are with the nForce2 and KT400 chipset... but my KT333 already goes up to 15x so I think it support multipliers up to 16x.
IMO Epox boards are the best overclocking boards.

With a 2700 and no voltage increase prime95 started erroring at 178 FSB. I am using a volcano 7+.

Kill 'em all and you're a god.

And when you increase the VCore? Or is the temp to high to do that?

The Epox 8RDA+ nforce2 mobo is a better overclocker than the asus

Besides that great looking system, it looks like you at least did your reading
