New system bluescreens on OS load

Just put together a budget gaming box:

CPU: Intel LGA1150 (G3258)
Mobo: MSI Z97M-G43
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750
Case: Lian-Li PC-9NA R
Heatsink: MasterCooler Hyper 212 Evo
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 4GB Sport DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 (x2, total of 8GB)
HDD: Older 1TB SeaGate with Windows XP (just for starters, plan is to install Win7 once the system was good to go)

I built it last night and turned it on; posts just fine, looks OK at the BIOS level. Once it starts to load the OS, however (Windows XP loading screen), it bluescreens telling me to do a CHKDISK.

After trying to work around this to no avail, I pulled the HDD out of my current system (Intel 2.5" 120GB SSD with Windows 7 installed) and tried to boot the new system with that. Same issue: BIOS fine, the second I see the Windows 7 loading screen it bluescreens out. Not sure what to do next.

Halpplz?

EDIT for common dumbassery issues:
1. I crawled through the mobo manual step by step (and the case, heatsink, and vidja card manuals too).
2. I plugged in the 4-pin CPU power connector, yes.
3. Case had standoffs installed already.
4. Vid card is seated properly (not a display issue anyway)
5. Vid card needs no external power.
6. I haven't tried booting with 1 stick of RAM, but I don't think that's the issue.
7. Both DIMMs are properly seated.
8. Mobo has priorities listed on the RAM slots (directly on the board, which was a nice surprise) and I think I followed those instructions fine.
9. Yes, I put the CPU in and removed the guard. :p
10/11. Pretty sure I didn't jack up the CPU when I installed it, but I feel like popping off my massive heatsink to check is more risk than it's worth. I have the pin-1 corner arrows aligned properly.
12. I put a thin film of thermal paste on the CPU before installing the heatsink (and I installed its backplate too). I swiped around the edges with a Q-tip to make sure I didn't drip any (though there really wasn't enough to dribble).
13. CPU fan is plugged in and confirmed running. I DO have one of my case fans unplugged (little cable won't reach, new one is on order) but that shouldn't be causing a problem.
14. Heatsink is theoretically installed adequately, though probably not superbly.
15. Don't think I have anything rattling around inside the case.
16. Was disciplined about static electricity.
17. I HAVEN'T installed the system speaker; I couldn't find pins for it and didn't see any mention in the mobo manual.
18. I was super careful about my power/reset/LED pin connectors, though I suppose it's possible I messed those up. Again, more risk than it's worth to check (?)
19. PSU is on and functioning.
20. I haven't updated the BIOS, but I don't think that's an issue. I don't have an optical drive for the computer, though I suppose I could use a USB...
21. I reset the CMOS (removed battery, closed jumper, waited, opened, reinstalled battery, rebooted) because I accidentally skipped first-time boot setup. Again, BIOS looked fine.
22. No need to try integrated vidjo port.
23. The only cable that isn't 100% secure is the 20-pin mobo power cable; everything else is pretty tight. (that one is juuuust not locked in and I think it's more danger to get it all the way due to flex on the board)

Okay, figured it out: I just needed to install a fresh OS. Not sure if the old one wasn't AHCI-compatible or just not suited to the build, but making a Windows install USB with Rufus and installing afresh seems to have solved the issue!
