Hello all,

I'm looking to build a new system (my current system is almost 10 years old). So, I'd like to setup a decent gaming rig.

I was thinking about this motherboard at it's core (ROG Maximus XIII Hero (WiFi 6E) Z590 LGA 1200(Intel®11th/10th Gen) ATX Gaming Motherboard ).

Any suggestions of motherboards, memory, harddrive, SSD, sound card, video card, case, CPU, etc would be great.

Oh and are liquid cooled systems mandatory these days? or only for extreme overclocking?

Thanks in advance

Solution
This board down below hit Europe two weeks ago and is due to arrive in the US any day now. DDR5 RAM is new and expensive but by the looks of it you keep hold of your builds for a good long while. Anyways this down below gives you a rough idea of a decent gaming build for your resolution that will last you awhile.

What country are you located, what is your budget, what is your monitor resolution or is a monitor to be included in the budget?

Liquid cooling is hardly mandatory.

Have you deliberately eliminated 12th generation Intel processors?
No. I'm open to all suggestions.

That MSI board was rated #1 B660 board by Hardware Unboxed. You could go with a Z690 board which would give you more PCIe lanes, PCIe 5.0 and the ability to overclock but by the time card manufacturers start making 5.0 cards you'll be ready for a new build which will include a new board not to mention overclocking is a hobbyist thing anymore seeing how it gets you minimal gains along with the extra cost for board, cpu and cooling. Overclocking has become a hose job .. just like the i9 cpu's which not only cost a boatload of money but they are power hungry heat producing hogs.

Your advice is to go the DDR5 route correct?
Not if you plan on doing a rebuild within the next four years or so. When I saw your last build was ten years ago I went with DDR5. DDR4 is faster in regards to gaming not to mention it's a lot cheaper than DDR5.

These days no reason to overclock anything really not much left the way everything is made.
Could add some RGB if you wish. Move the original front fans to the top and put the extra fans in the front.

You will probably need the LGA1700 bracket for the CPU cooler Amazon sells them about 10 bucks.

With the 1440p monitor you could even go this way or keep the 12700K and up the video card.

Just curious, but why the unlocked cpu + Z690 board?

Mostly gaming, but some video editing too (and work stuff too). I've gotten used to paying a premium for ASUS motherboards over the years. How things have changed.
Unlike the 12700F (no integrated graphics) I posted earlier in this thread, this cpu down below will allow you to enable Intel's Quick Sync.

Hey Zark. Are your recommendations still valid? It's been about a month and a half. I wasn't able to do my build until now. Would you change anything? Also, Prime Day is today so I'm wondering how that impacts your recomendations. Thanks in advance.

You might check the updated price differential between DDR 4 and DDR 5. The gap has narrowed quite a bit recently. Best prices I have seen are from the RAM manufacturer's own web site, rather than Amazon, Newegg, etc.

Up to you to decide if the gap is still large enough to prevent you from going with a DDR 5 motherboard.

This one now says 2085,not sure if you already have windows to update to W11 for free, also you might need the LGA 1700 mounting kit for the cooler it's like 8 bucks on Amazon.

Add some RGB if you wish.

I have not looked at any Amazon deals so no clue on that.

So, you wouldn't change any of the items or even upgrade to a DDR5 MB? Just wondering since prices have come down over the past month and a half. Thanks again.
