I need some help. I'm building my new computer and I'm not sure what I need. I'm getting an Antec case so I have the means. But do I have the neccesity. I'm getting an AMD processor, I hear they run hot. Do I need a better fan than the one supplied? Should I look at a Volcano or something? And are HDD fans good to have? The case I'm getting has two external fans already, should I install more.
In conclusion I'm clueless, so any help you guys can give me would be great, thanks

I'm getting an AMD processor, I hear they run hot.
Newer processors don't run as hot as they used to, so it's not a big concern anymore, unless you plan on overclocking.

Do I need a better fan than the one supplied?
Not unless you plan to overclock your processor. The stock cooler is fine for normal operation, though you could change that to something that's adjustable.

The Thermaltake SLK-900 for example allows you to install fans ranging from 60mm to 92mm in size. A throttled 92mm adjustable fan is good, because it'll allow you to push the same amount of air compared to a smaller fan, but with reduced noise.

Should I look at a Volcano or something?
If you like sure. But if your motherboard supports it, you might want to get the SLK-900 HSF.

And are HDD fans good to have?
Depends. Cooler HDDs is good, but the excess noise it generates is bad.

The case I'm getting has two external fans already, should I install more.
Generally no, but if you plan on doing some overclocking, then yes you should.

1. if you are not overclocking, then the stock fan is fine.

2. yes, HDD fans are good 2 have

3. usually you have a bit more exhaust fans then intakes, because the aim is to suck more hot air out rather then pumping cold air in, well, the cold air intake is to improve air circulations in your case. so you could put 1fan as intake and 1 as exhaust, or you could put the 2 as exhaust and buy another fan for intake, its up 2 u.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking of getting AMD Barton 2500+ and OC'in it. 1 intake, 2 exhaust. Therefore, I gather I'll need more than a stock fan for my CPU, that SLK sounds good. Is water cooling worth the money, I can get one for about 3 times the price of a Volcano. ?

I live in Canada (if your wondering about the price)
$159 Evercool WC-101 Water Cooling System
$47 Volcano 11 CPU Fan 4800rpm Copper

(if you want to check out my options for me I'm using www.a-power.com)

Awww crud my supplier dosn't have thermalright, so what do you think?

Volcano 11 CPU Fan 4800rpm Copper
vs
Volcano 7+ CPU Fan w/HML Copper
vs
CoolJag JAC102C Socket-462 Fan

The 7+ is a pretty good cooler, one of the best around.. EXTREME overkill for a stock processor though.

My CPU is so powerful its faster than Melb_Angel's Laptop! 😱 (Plus it's not pink)

I plan on doing some overclocking, so the 7+ is a better cooler than the 11? Good to know. Thanks guys, oh does anyone have a barton 2500+ and overclocked it? If so, to what speed?

Relax. The XP2500+ overclocks as good as any amd chip. can easily get up to XP2700 speeds...
unless you are monumentally unlucky and get a OC dud. (very rare)

If I wanted to overclock my barton 2500+ from 1.83ghz to around 2ghz what would be the best fan/heatsink for the lowest price? I'd hope to spend no more then $25 Canadian if I could help it.

Nate must live in Vancouver like me because I shop at www.a-power.com alot too. However I have noticed recently that www.atic.ca has consistently lower prices in almost everything compared to www.a-power.com and Atic's store is on west Broadway which isn't that far from A-power.

Cool man, actually I live up in the Okanagan, but a-power is my best bet (5 hours from here). I'll try atic though. I only looked at a few option a-power beats ncix hands down.

Yeah you're right, I can save 150$ by buying from both a-power and atic. Thanks man. Anyway, it looks like you've got some good options on atic. If I were you I would spend the extra cash on a volcano 7+ or 11. You gotta get a copper heat sync, aluminum sucks.

No I havn't tried newegg. the only places I have ever bought from are Rock Computers ATIC and A-Power and Elitech. All are local places for me.
