Good morning all. I'm going to build a new pc with a Ryzen5 2600 cpu. Im an Intel guy but decided to try amd and im researching AMDs stuff.

I'm scaling down my build for a mATX setup. I just purchased a Samsung
SSD 860 EVO M.2 SATA 500GB
MZ-N6E500BW to use as a bootable drive for Win10. In my research I've noticed several complaints about Not being able to boot from the m.2 socket if you have SSDs installed as well. I'll have 1 1tb samsung SSD for steam game storage and the other is a 4tb Hdd for movies, music and porn.

So, is this setup possible? Can i boot win10 from the m.2 without any issues from the other Sata ports?

Also.... know any good mATX mobos? Not many to choose from it looks like.

Thanks!!

Jason

What is your MB ? CPU doesn't have anything to do with drives. If MB is with 400 series chipset, they do not disable any SATA connections when M.2 is installed (if that was your question).
You'd be well advised to install windows before you connect your old drives.
https://www.amazon.com/ASRock-MicroATX-Motherboard-B450M-PRO4/dp/B07FVYKFXF should be fine.

I didn't know that about the 400 series MBs, thanks.
Also, thanks for the suggestion on the ASRock MB. That's not my first choice because of my black and red theme but as for features it might be the MB i will go with. It's one of the few that have 4 memory slots. Thanks!!!

I think there may be some confusion which might need clearing up....

It's true that furnished by the B450 and B350 chipsets are 4 SATA ports which has nothing to do with the CPU. But with Ryzen processors at least, 4 PCIe lanes are provided by the CPU which most (if not all) motherboards use for a PCIeX4 M.2 slot. SOME motherboards will also furnish two SATA ports with an either/or option: plug an NVME in the M.2 and the SATA ports are disabled.

So you will see some B450/B350 motherboards with 4 SATA ports: they will most likely have nothing to do with the CPU. But there are other B450/B350 motherboards with 6 SATA ports of which 2 will most likely be disabled when you plug in a PCIex4 NVME in the M.2. Or maybe the other way as it depends on how they work the PCIe switch methodology. You have to read the mobo spec sheet carefully.

I'm not sure how that works on X470/370 boards or with other than Ryzen processors (like AM4 Athlon or Bristol Ridge).

If you're considering the B450M Pro4, it specs only 4 SATA ports. But the B450 Pro4 (the full-size ATX variant) specs 6 ports in which case steer clear of SATA 5&6 with and NVME fitted in the M.2.
