My son wants a gameboy and I have never messed with them.

He wants the Gameboy Advance original, -not- the SP. I think the light,
rechargable battery and smaller size makes the SP a better deal.

He claims the original looks cooler, is more comfortable and since it uses
standard batteries, we can keep it powered with our present rechargable
AA's. Good arguments all...

I wonder what others think, any input apreciated.

Also, I was looking at "Book Reader". Is there a better solution, so I can
get him to read some books on his gameboy?

TIA

The batteries are never a problem for me. And besides, the light on the
SP is definitely enough to convince me about it. It's just flat out
better for it.

You need to go with the SP. You WILL want lighting which becomes
cumbersome on the original GBA and drains the batteries a bit faster.
The fact that it closes to protect the screen is also a plus. His
argument on the comfort is good, but the battery usage is really a
non-issue.

I did get 2 SPs, with the game link and headphones.

But I still wonder about the BookReader issue, I have done some web
searches, but can't find much that doesn't require me learning how to hack
GBAs.

Well, I'm not familiar with the "BookReader" you are talking about. If
you REALLY want to get into reading books on the GBA, your best bet is
probably going to be buying a GBA development kit (insert shameless plug
here: http://www.jandaman.com/) and using an ebook reader program like
his one: http://iahu.ca:8080/ebook.html.

I've never like the SP.. partly because I've got fairly large hands
(stretched from many years of playing guitar!) and I don't like the way
the buttons are arranged.

Personally I still love my original GBA.. the main issue with it was
the lack of built in light (I installed an Afterburner kit on mine and
never looked back).
You really do need a light, though, and if you are not prepared to get
an afterburner installed then you should probably get the SP

also I suppose it's not my place to say it, but wouldn't it be healthier
for your son's eyes if he were to read normal books as opposed to
reading them on a tiny screen like a GBA's?

If he flatly refuses to read books, maybe he can read some gaming
magazines or something

That's basically what I am talking about... but for about the same price
I can buy a used pda that will transfer text files.

Here's "Book Reader" for GBA http://www.mqp.com/fun/ (insert generic
no relationship disclaimer)

He loves reading, but we are planning on doing a lot of traveling, and
we have a lot of ebooks. I just thought if it were easy to do I would do it.

So I was thinking about getting one of these, but your page shows a lot
of sold out items. Of the ones available, I am not sure which would be the
best. My admittedly uneducated opinion points to this one "gbaezflashII512",
but I would welcome any suggestions, considering price and availability. I
would want to have it in my hands within 7 days.

Well, it's not my page, it's a person I have purchased equipment from in
the past and can highly recommend as he was great to deal with. You'd
have to check with the company for your exact needs. I offer a simple
consumer recomendation only.

I went ahead and ordered the flashkit. I was shipped yesterday and might
be here tomorrow! I have already made my first simple game in VisualHAM. I'm
very excited.
