New (used) GPU not recognised in BIOS

Hi,

I've performed a number of searches on this problem but have been unable to find an answer for why a GPU (HIS IceQ 7970 3gb) I've picked up second-hand isn't working.

My hardware is as follows:
- GPU: Gigabyte 7790
- Mobo: Asus 77z Extreme4
- PSU: Corsair gs600 (600w)

My current GPU (7790) shows up in device manager and BIOS even without software installed. The PCI-E slot is working fine.

This is what I've tried:
- using different combinations of the 6 + 8 pin connectors
- Resetting cmos and mobo
- Uninstalling previous driver manually and through Atiman uninstaller
- Attempting to install AMD 7970 driver (fails)
- Ensuring Bios is set to PCI-E graphics
- Removing and reinstalling the GPU several times

The fans on the card will power up when I plug in either a 6 pin, 8 pin or 6+6 pin connector (not 6+8 pin - or I wont get display through the mobo). The connections on the card look clean but there is cosmetic wear/damage to other areas of the card.

I suspect the card was dead on arrival but the seller packaged it correctly with padding and an anti-static bag. I'd like to make sure that the card is defective before I open a Paypal resolution.

Is there something glaring that I've missed? I've searched for hours and am unable to come up with an answer as to why it's not even recognised at BIOS. I don't have another PC to test this card with and I'm pretty sure that my mobo firmware is not a problem.

Please help!

Solution
I managed to solve the problem by using both PCI power connectors (6+8) while booting with the hdmi in the GPU rather than the mobo hdmi port.

I suspect that the computer was booting correctly the whole time with 6+8 pins but defaulting video output to the PCI-E which is strange as this didn't happen with my other card.

Since I figured this out by myself I think it's most appropriate If I pick my own answer as the best. Thanks for attempting to help me.
Hi

amendment to post
I should have asked what you ment by not working
I presumed nothing displayed on screen

If you were trying to change device drivers do you have two screens one working on integrated graphics?

-----------------------
I saw the specification which said card has 2 x 8 pin PCI-e 12V connectors

unless user guide say anything less will work you do not have proof of fault only lack of PSU power
(AMD reference card has 6pin + 8 pin )

Though maker also says 500W PSU with 2 x 8pin PCI-e 12 V plugs is minimum
(rare to find 2 on 500W PSU)

Ask the seller what sort of PSU he was using and if 2 x 8 pin plugs are required

or find some one with a bigger PSU in their PC to test the card.

If the hard drive(s) is disconnected the PC will boot up to no boot device message or load a Windows DVD but show messages on the screen
(assuming correct bios setting for boot graphics )

Well the card doesn't even show up in bios and I'm only getting a display because I'm connecting hdmi through the motherboard. The fans will spin but that's the only evidence I have that the item isn't a complete brick.

I have a 600w PSU and the minimum recommended is 500w. I would have thought 600w would be enough for the card to be detected on Bios or through DeviceManager. The new GPU has an 8 pin and 6 pin connector. I've tried every combination which produces the same result, except for using 6+8 which prevents the computer from booting properly.

I just asked the seller what his PSU was and what pins he was using before I read your post. I'll let you know what he/she says.

The issue clearly in't a boot issue because I'm using my PC now with my old GPU (the 7790) in the same slot where I just tried the new GPU (7970). My old card works flawlessly.

My mobo has a graphic display in bios where it shows what is connected to the Mobo. When I have my new GPU seated It shows my Ram and CPU but seems to think the PCI-E slot is empty. I can't think of what's wrong if it's not a dead on arrival.

Thanks

put the 7790 in the pc boot it up download DDU driver uninstaller than follow instructions don't update go to safemode when tells to open application in safemode click UNINSTALL AND SHUTDOWN after that's done let it sit there for a 1 minute than take the 7790 out and put the new gpu in
