I recently overhauled my pc and im trying to install my old Segate 1tb hdd into it. my SSD installed with no problem. but the Segate is showing up in the Disk management section but i can not create a new volume in it or initialize it. every time i try to initialize it an error pops up saying that the task could not be performed due to an I/O device error. it also says that i have 3.86 gb unallocated on the disk manager

Hey there, Nickner.

If you're getting an I/O error, the drive might be faulty. Do you have any important data which you wish to recover from it, or you just want to try and fix it, so that you can use it as a secondary storage drive?
In both cases, the first thing you should do, is to try the drive with a different computer, to see if the same thing happens. If you don't have that option, you should at least try it with a different SATA port and cables on yours. If the issue still persists and you don't need to recover any data, I'd recommend that you try the chkdsk command, to see if that fixes things up. Open CMD (Command Prompt) and type chkdsk X: /r /f and press "enter" (where X is the letter of the drive you wish to check so...

If that doesn't help you could download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool and test the drive, to see if anything out of the ordinary pops-up.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.
