just got a new ASUS monitor, it runs at 1920 x 1080, i am looking to upgrade my video card, (i have a gtx 260 core 216 but its being sold to a friend, along with everything else), i have all the parts i want for my new build picked out except for the video card.

budget: under $400
looking at: the 5870, or maybe running SLI (x2 gtx 260 core 216..2nd choice...) on my new monitor (not sure if SLI isworth it at the 1920 x 1080 resolution.)

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated,
thanks!

5870 would be better then the SLI gtx260.

SLI and Crossfire are worth it at 19X10 but only if you love eye candy (AA and AF)

I would suggest if you are willing to spend the money (and can actually find one) the 5870 is the way to go, but if you can wait the 5870 Vapor-X is coming out soon (no actual release date though, they just showed it off. Better cooler.

If you don't want to max games out though, or don't care for eye candy I would suggest 1 HD4890 and call it a day.

what htz are you running you monitor in? because if its 60htz then look for a card that benchmarks all games more than 60fps. 5870 would be perfect specially with the possibility of crossfiring in the future.

True, I was saying the 4890 howeve to save a few bucks. That way you can upgrade to a 5850 or 5870 later on still, the 4890 would save you the most cash so you can upgrade later when non-reference coolers come out.

Still if you want DX 11 now, and the most performance now the 5850 is good idea.

The 5850 is going to be the better deal once these cards are released. DX11 isn't going to be implemented properly for a long time, and with that being said, it's not detrimental that you get a first generation DX11 card. It would actually be, I hate to say it - an unwise idea. I suggest holding off to see what Nvidia offers also.

SLi GTX260 performs the same as a 5870.

2x GTX260 SLi performs equal to a GTX295, which performs about equal or slightly better than a 5870.

The advantage is the 5870 is a single card, so you won't have SLi issues. The disadvantage is that 2xGTX260s will be ~$80 cheaper than a 5870

The smart thing to do is wait a few months. Not for graphics cards, but for games 😛 What is the point of upgrading now, if you don't even know what games are coming out. For all we know we could be waiting until 1010~ until any worthy games come out.

If you must, you could upgrade now, but your best choice in that scenario is to get the HD 5870, that way you can future proof your system. Simply because it posses superior performance and capabilities than the HD 5850, which CANNOT be "overclocked" or modified for.

Or you can get the HD 4870's on crossfire, which currently trumphs the GTX 295 and GTX 280 on sli....

2x4870s in Crossfire performs about the same as a GTX295 (which performs about the same as two GTX260s in SLi).

GTX280s in SLi will be better than 2x4870s in Xfire, 2xGTX260s in SLi, and GTX295

2xGTX280 > 2x4870 ~ 2xGTX260 ~ GTX295

GTX285 > GTX280 >/~ GTX275 > GTX260 ~ 4870

leaning towards a 5870 but that could change, thanks for all the answers/opinions (there is a lot to choose from 😛).
but lets say i do go for 2 gtx 260, would a 750w psu (its a corsair) be powerful enough?

I shall go eat crow.

750 should be fine

but i strongly suggest you dont buy OLD TECH.Theres a bunch off new cool stuff happening with the new cards, dx11, shading, lighting etc. if you are buying now get the 5870 if you can wait 2-3 months there will be many new cards out. nvidia and ati,s other new ones
