New video card or new UW monitor?

I recently upgraded my desktop with a Ryzen 5 1600, but am still running my EVGA GTX 970 for video card. It runs perfectly well (60+ FPS) for the games I play; Fallout 4, BF4, Division, Dragon Age Inquisition, Sniper 4, Witcher 3. I prefer single-player story and immersion of world over fast-twitch multiplayer.

I wasn't intending to upgrade my video card at this point, as the 970 is still very capable (and GPU prices went kinda nuts).
However, I was thinking about getting a new monitor. My current monitor is an Acer H243H; 24 inch, 1080p, 60 Hz, bought in 2010. In particular, I have been looking at the 1440p Ultra-wides. The problem is that 1440 ultrawides start at 34 inches and around $600 and quickly go up to $800+ with the curved screens. The 1080 ultrawides are half the price even at 34 inches. Additionally, 1440p ultrawide runs $250+ _more_ than a new GTX 1080. But, a new monitor should last me for many (10+?) years, whereas the video card will need upgrading at least a couple times in that period.
I'm not in a hurry, was planning on seeing what deals came out for black friday/cyber monday.

So;
Is it worth going ultrawide for my uses?
Is it worth going 1440p vs 1080p?
Should I just hang onto my Acer and wait till UW prices come down more?

Solution
For UW, your FPS will be even lower, due to more pixels... You can always downgrade, most modern monitors should be able to accommodate and improve FPS.
On the ultrawide, go to a store and see it in person to decide, some people don't like it. Try to watch a ultrawide 1080p and normal 1440p, find out which one you prefer. If Ultrawide, just get a Ultrawide 1080p monitor.
For GTX 970, 1440p can only do 30- FPS. If you think that is fine, then go with 1440p monitor...
Ideal path for 1440p gaming -> good 1440p monitor on sale first, then GTX980 or GTX1070 on sale some other time :)

If I understand your suggestion, it may be better to get a 1080p UW (or a 1440p HD 16:9) now for 1/2 the price, then upgrade to a 1440p (or higher) UW in 5-7 years for basically the same overall $$ spent (400x2 over 5+ yrs vs 700+ now, assuming normal price declines).
Given that I'll be undoubtedly upgrading the video card more than once in the next 10 years, I'd be more inclined to get a higher resolution ultrawide so the benefit lasts longer.
On that note, if the GTX970 can't push 1440p UW at better than 30FPs, is it possible to downscale the resolution from 1440p? E.g. run game at 2560x1080 on a UW with native 3440x1440, in order to gain fps?

Regardless, a trip to Best Buy for some monitor gazing is probably in order...
