New Video Card

Hi my name is Lily, I recently Got a new video card, My old one is a GeForce GT220 1 GB DDR 2
and it ran well with my Dynex 400 watt Powersupply. The new one Is a Radeon 7870 1000M 2GB D5 and my Current 400watt doesnt work with it, so My boyfriend plans to send me his old 850 Watt Powersupply, Are there any downsides to upgrading to the new powersupply? Is it to much power for the video card?

There is no such thing as too much power as the excess power will not be used

Actually, it's not that "excess power" won't be used, as much as it is that it just won't pull anything other than what it needs from the wall socket to start with. And going larger than necessary is beneficial since it becomes far less likely to ever run near capacity and cause a thermal issue or overload the unit.
