The last build I did was many years ago - it's based on an i7-3770 with 16GB of memory. At the time, it was a pretty powerful Lightroom/Photoshop build.

Looking to upgrade that for continued Lightroom/Photoshop use and also get something that can edit GoPro video at 4k. The current machine can do this but it is very balky and I have to use low-res proxies in the workflow.

Needs/Not Needs:
  • Need a quiet machine. Computer sits in our family room and is on all the time. Currently use an Antec case and have been happy with it
  • Need space for lots of drives. Current machine has 7 internal drives - 2 2.5" SSDs (boot drive and Lightroom Catalog/Previews) and 5 3.5" drives. Plan is to move the SSDs to NVME but keep the other internal drives
  • Don't want any RGB or other bling
  • Won't overclock
  • Not a gaming machine
  • Don't need the fastest/latest but something that will have legs for the next 5 years
  • Would like to be about $1750

850w is overkill for that build. A 750w psu would more than suffice but tbh a 550w psu would do the trick.

Thanks Why_Me. I like the idea of the 12700 instead of the 12700K and yes, 850W is overkill. I thought I had changed that to 750W.
I've gone with the Z690 chipset because of the 6x SATA ports. The B660 only has 4 and I would prefer not to have to use an add-in card to get more.

This case is nice and quiet while also allowing for better airflow than the Antec. A 13700 will remain useful for longer than something like a 12700/k because it is much more performant. For some reason the rx 6600 you chose is way overpriced. The aircooler I included is very good for the price and pretty quiet. Dropped you down to a very quiet and higher quality PSU.

16gb Vram GPU and 24 core CPU for pure productivity focused performance:

The Steel legend Z690 has bios flashback feature for BIOS update. Asrock Taichi GPU for silent operation and no coil whine.

Wow. Thanks so much for the suggestions.
CPU - I think I'm getting convinced to lean into the i7-13700 with a Z790 mobo.
Case - There are just so many choices in cases that it's great to have the feedback from this forum. I like the specs of the bequiet! 802 case though it is expensive and I would have to buy additional cages for all my drives.
Cooler - when I did my last build, Noctua was the rage. Would I be better off with a NH-D15?
GPU - what would your recommendation be for a step up in the GPU moving over to the Nvidia lineup without getting crazy?

Again, I appreciate all the feedback from everyone.

If the gpu is gonna do the heavy lifting in your tasks, go for the i7. But if you think the cpu would be used half as much, I would suggest getting the i9. Especially if you are not gonna overclock and want a quiet system.

The performance difference between the NH D15, deep cool AK620, and thermalright peerless assassin is close enough. You can't go wrong those choices. Get the cheapest option available to you.

Regarding gpu, the 3070ti is closest match performance and price wise.

The 4060 and 4070 are due to release this April, maybe wait n see. You might see good discounts on 3080 12gb after 4060/4070 launch...
