I just updated my Windows 10 and now there is a new partition on my HDD. There is space filled within the partition but when I click inside there are no files. I have checked the boxes to show hidden files but still cannot see anything.

Pic of your Disk Management window, please.
But this is almost certainly an existing System partition, that now has a drive letter.
Major OS updates sometimes do that by mistake.
So I thought it might be a recovery drive. Is it safe to merge them into my main drive so don't have two showing.
NO.
Simply remove that drive letter. Do NOT merge it with anything else.
Hey, I have the very same problem and am unsure of what you mean by 'simply remove' - I see it is a partition of my system drive in storage management, but how do I remove its drive letter? In storage management, where I'd normally have the option to, the menu options for that are reduced to 'help' :-(
//NEVERMIND, I succeeded using the diskpart commands.
