This a Mini-ITX build, X570 Aorus Master, 990 Pro M.2, 3060TI, I have downloaded the creation tool and image file from Microsoft on seperate SD devices, selected the drive to boot but I either get the message "An operating system wasn't found" or just a black screen after selecting the boot drive. I have it on a SD card and a thumb drive, tried the front panel USB and MB USB. Safe bet it's a simple user error but can't figure it out. MB was from another build and has the current F39 BIOS.

Any thoughts, tips?

Thats not how it works.

On a different, working system, you run the MediaCreation tool to create a bootable USB.

Follow this, step by step:
Ok, copy that. I reached the step where I had the exe. on the SD card but was thinking it would try to install on my current PC, I thought this would open on the new PC after boot....been awhile since I did this. Currently creating the media on the SD card and will report back..thanks again.

All is running well, I do have this one thing to clear up, it's showing the boot device as a separate item from the C drive, even though it's on the C drive.

I'm sure it's easily fixed in disk management but don't want to ask as it's my C drive. How to make it seen as one drive in the BIOS?

1. Was the desired drive the only drive connected when you did the install?
The Samsung 990?

The only drive connected onto the motherboard is the 990 Pro but I had the SD card on a USB port on the back port of the motherboard for the boot. I did leave it attached during the install. The BIOS is showing this with the SD card not connected..likely the partition.
Your windows boot manager is on your 990 pro , so what's the issue? It should be running fine.
Yes it's running fine but it should only show one drive.

There are 2 pics, not sure if both are showing at once.

BIOS and Disk Manager.

iT'S normal, it's only showing 2 options on the same drive.
Reason I question it, this is the first time in a dozen or so builds I have seen this. I believe it comes down to the partition. Which reminds me, I had to use "diskpart" to clean the new 990 during the install for it to be recognized, maybe that played a part in this.

If you ended up with a completely blank drive before you click Go...what you see is abolutely notmal.

What you should be booting from is "Windows Boot Manager".
In DIsk Management, that would be the small partition to the left.

lOOKS THE SAME ON MY ASROCK board with a Samsung 990 EVO.
Is this a 990 thing? 😉

I'm not disagreeing it's not normal, but this is my main PC, and mirrors any other build I have done.

My C drive and any other drive, in this case it's a CD/DVD drive.

I personally have never seen any other boot device from other than my single C drive.

Disk Manager looks the same Edit to add: Shows EFI

I'm pretty sure, the USAFRet post you are referencing is a typo meaning"normal", eg "notmal" was not a typo "not normal", he simply typed the adjacent"t", instead of the "r". The image you posted from the disk manager is typical of how Windows arranges an OS with everything installed on a single multi-partitioned drive.

Correct, and my post was correct in it's intention. However for some reason my phone put a not in there as I typed "normal" and when I fixed it there was another "not" in there....and I didn't see it until you pointed it out...lol....thanks!

So should have read "I'm not disagreeing that it's normal"
