Iv'e had windows 7 64bit on my PC for over a year, but after some networking issues I finally decided to "upgrade" to windows 8.1 64 bit pro.

I did a clean install after a format, onto my SSD, after I installed the most current AMD graphics driver (Omega 14.12) my PC has run into an issue in which after start up my screen will keep disconnecting and reconnecting (making the device disconnect/reconnect sound) every few seconds for a few minutes after boot, Iv'e tried uninstalling/reinstalling the driver a few times and it only happens when it's installed, iv'e re downloaded it a few times, and the only thing that seems to help is uninstalling raptr (gaming evolved) makes it happen a few less times.

Iv'e crawled the internet for a solution and can't find one, any help would be appreciated in advance :)

AMD HD 7970
AMD 8350
Corsair Vengeance 8GB
OCZ SSD 64GB
Seagate barracuda 1TB

Well Darkbreeze, you may hate me but I found the solution, while taking the case off the side of my computer, I saw something in the back, that I completely didn't even think about checking, I have an Oculus Rift DK2, so I unplugged it and sure enough the issue has disappeared, I completely forgot to check it because windows claimed in device manager that only 1 screen was plugged in (I guess technically it was right).

Thanks for all your help, I wouldn't of stumbled across the solution if you hadn't suggested what you did :) I'll make the topic as solved, thankyou again, maybe someone else will have this problem one day and stumble across this. 😛

EDIT: okay it appears I can't select my own answer as the solution, maybe if I mod sees...

Hey I tried your suggestion, but no dice, the issue still persists.

As for my power supply, its a 650w thermal take smart series, it's 80+ bronze, I am highly doubtful that it's my power supply though considering Iv'e had it for over a year and it can handle my system (with windows 7) under full load for hours e.g when rendering videos, or running certain games.

But seriously thankyou for even taking in intrest in my problem :)

EDIT: again I just wanted to mention that it only effects the system for a few minutes after startup and then vanishes, but it's highly annoying, as not only does the screen turn off, but the mouse jumps back to the center, and I'm already beginning to hate the device connect/disconnect sound.

This is probably a BIOS compatibility setting. Windows 7 is usually installed used an MBR partition. Windows 8 is usually installed using a GPT partition. While the partition type probably isn't related to this particular issue, I thought you should be aware of it as you indicated that you had reinstalled but had formatted prior to pointing windows to the installation location so it's quite likely the old boot record partition from windows 7 is still present and could be causing issues. To do a true clean install you want to choose the custom option, delete ALL partitions until nothing is left except unallocated space when you get to the point where windows asks where you want to install and then install to the unallocated space. Windows 8 will create the necessary partition and boot record on its own, not leaving behind the MBR.

Also, if UEFI mode is not enabled in the BIOS and windows 8 was installed using an MBR boot record, which it will do if legacy modes are enabled, it can sometimes cause issues as well.

What MIGHT be related though, is a setting called CSM or compatibility service module or possibly the UEFI vs Legacy mode issue. There is also the possibility of a few other BIOS settings causing issues.

What is the model of your motherboard? You might seriously consider going into the BIOS and resetting to optimal defaults, save settings, restart and go back into the bios to change back any intentional settings you may have had changed previously like fan profiles or RAM settings, save again and reboot.

I believe I had an ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0, I can't be 100% sure because Iv'e built a lot of computers for people, and they never keep the boxes so my cupboard is just full of boxes for everything, but I definitely remember it being an ASRock 970 something.

I don't remember changing any settings (besides AHCI for my SSD) but would it be worth considering flashing the latest BIOS, or re installing windows 8 again and selecting the UEFI only mode? (last time I selected recommended which was UEFI/BIOS) :)

The motherboard model should be printed directly on the motherboard itself. It would be good to know the model number so I can take a look at the manual to determine exactly which BIOS settings are available in that UEFI version in order to make correct suggestions to you regarding the actual options in YOUR bios, rather than general suggestions. You might also want to go into windows disk management and take a screenshot of the partition structures and post them here so I can take a look at how it's currently configured.
