I recently replaced a dead wireless router (5 year old Linksys - dont know model #) and am having some strange issues on startup. Here's the setup info:

Motorola SB6141 cable modem (Time Warner if it matters)
ASUS RT-AC56R wireless router hardwired into
Dell PC running Win 7

I have to shut down all but the cable modem every night because reasons. With the old router, I would turn everything on in the morning and it would all just start working. With the new router, the computer automatically makes a wireless connection. When I open up the networking panel, no local wired connection shows up. If I restart the PC, a wired and a wireless connection will be created. I really just want the wired connection.

Here's what I've tried so far that hasn't worked:
Booting the computer, then turning on the router.
Turning on the router, then booting the computer.
In the networking panel I disabled "automatically connect" to the wireless network, but it seems to reset itself on reboot somehow.

Any suggestions appreciated- thanks!

If you don't want to use the wireless connection, just disable the wireless adapter on the PC.

Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings

Right click on the Wireless Network Connection and choose "Disable".

If needed, it's simple to reverse if you ever need to use the wireless.

Disabling the wireless connection didn't work (see original post). To get rid of the wireless connection, I finally ended up disabling the hardware in the Device Manager. That solved the problem of the the unwanted wireless connection, but the other issue remains; when the machine boots up for the first time, it won't make a network connection to the router that it is hard-wired to. Reboot the machine and the connection appears.

Have you updated the router to latest firmware?

You could also try installing DD-WRT open source firmware. (use build for RT-AC56U (same router, just different letter at end for how it was sold))

Also it could be something simple like you need a new ethernet cable? Or try a different ethernet port on the router.

I did the firmware update when I installed the router, but <doh!> didn't think about switching ports. That fixed an issue I had with a different router many years back, so I'll give it a try. Thanks.
