I am having trouble with VirtualDub (Version 1.5.10, Build 18160)

I am trying to capture video from my Sony digital camcorder DCR-PC101 NTSC.

I set the camcorder to playbeack mode.
I open VirtualDub.
I click "File", "Capture AVI"
I get a dialog box that says: "VirtualDub cannot detect the desired capture
driver. Trying all available drivers."
When I click "OK", I get "PANIC:VirtualDub cannot connect to any capture
drivers."

What is happening?
What am I doing wrong?
What should I do to correct the problem?

Thanks in advance

Exactly what it says: that it cannot connect to any capture driver. Or
put it this way: there is no capture driver it can connect to. It can
only connect to capture drivers based on Vfw, not the ones based on
Wdm. Unfortunately, the newest capture cards only come with Wdm
drivers, and you'll need a different capture program.

I have a GF4600 VIVO, but when I try to capture with VDub I get that error,
but if I start the Leadtek PVR capture softwre, then close it, VDub will
capture with preview. Perhaps your does this, it thinks the capture driver
is in use, but it frees itself after a use?

In researching this a bit further I have another question.

I do not have a firewire capture card. I am trying to capture DV through my USB
2.0 port. Is this even possible. I was under the impression it was. If so,
how do I do this successfully.

If this is not possible, send me a dunce cap, and I will go sit in a corner.

And someone please tell me what to do.

Read the info on your Camcorder to make sure it will output the full
resolution video on the USB port, some don't. If it does, then it "may"
work, although firewire is much more supported and may be more trouble free
than USB if you have many USB things connected to your computer. Firewire
cards are pretty cheap and may come with some video capture software.
