Newbie help needed - air cooling for E8400 @4GHz - Quiet

Title says it all really. About to get the above CPU on a P5Q-E (ebay purchase). Seller said he had it running solid a 4GHz but was using water cooling (which isn't part of the purchase) and I'm not sure I'm ready to go down that road so will stick to air. I'd like a solution that's going to do the job and do it quietly as I'm also putting a quiet GPU and PSU into the system, along with some sound dampening foam into the case.

Would really appreciate some suggestions.

hmm... a TRUE with a quiet fan or two strapped to it? could be a bit expensive though. a xigmatek HDT-S1283 with fan on low is pretty quiet, and theres no temp difference between low and high so.. just grab a xiggy imo, and if its still too loud for you (you have problems :lol just buy a silent fan and put that on it instead of the stock fan that comes with it. make sure not to get the EE 1283 though..

That will fit your board ok, but would also suggest if you get the Xigmatek you also get the Back-plate Bracket. Which will allow for better and tighter fit then using the stock Intel style pushpins hook-up.

thanks for the tips guys. I think I'm going to go with the Xigmatek as it seem to be a good value/performance option. A bit more digging around with these combinations seems to show some are getting 50C under load @4GHz which seems pretty good. I'm assuming any decent 3rd-party TIM can be used to good effect.

I have the 8400 @ 4GHz but with a Asus Rampage formula mobo and a Tuniq Tower 120 it runs at 37 degrees at idle and 56 at full whack under prime. I haven't had a game get anywhere near that temp yet.

noctua c12-p is a wonderful and quiet cooler, its about 50quid from ebuyer i think.

keeps my e8600@4ghz at 28c when idle, max around 35-40c with load.
heh maybe its time i pushed it a little harder.

You have to be really careful. Measure from the top of the CPU to the lowest part of the probably DVD player that will overhang the CPU area. After you have installed the mobo and CPU of course. Then start looking for low profile coolers, they are listed like that sometimes.
