Hi im like an ultra newbie to this game but I think its like the all time
greatest game... Anywho i have a very low alchemy skill (just starting out
and all) and my potions always fail. i was wondering if there are any sure
fire recipies out there that will create some simple potions so i can get my
alchemy skill up and start making better ones later. a

Characters with low Alchemy skills OFTEN fail when making potions. You
can keep trying to make potions until your alchemy skill finely
improves, or you can pay to improve your alchemy skill.

If you decide to improve your alchemy skill without paying for training,
I've found that for low level characters, eating ingredients seems to
work more often (improving your alchemy skill), than trying to create
potions...

Keep in mind that the quality of the potions you make depends on 3
things, your characters Intelligence, his/her Alchemy skill, and the
quality of the Alchemy equipment they use.

Good Luck! ^_^

Use any two of the following three commonly found ingredients to
produce a Restore Fatigue potion: hound meat, crab meat, small kwama
egg. Racer plume and trama root make a Levitation potion that usus
ally succeeds, even for beginners. Here's a hint for more successful
potion making for beginners: If your Alchemy skill is so low that you
cannot see any effects when you select an item, just go through all
your ingredients two at a time and look for question marks in the
effects screen. When you see one or more question marks, then you
have selected ingredients that will make a potion. When you can see
some effects, avoid trying to create a Paralyze potion. I have
discovered that you need a pretty high Alchemy skill to succeed at
making this potion.

Another helpful hint is that any two of bloat, ash yam and netch
leather will make a Fortify Intelligence potion. If you succeed in
making one of these, drink it and it will greatly increase the
likelihood that your other attempts at potion making will succeed.
Good luck.

Saltrice and marshmarrow (or one of those and wickwheat) make a pretty
effective Restore Health potion. A big bonus is if you do a lot of
traveling on foot you can collect a fair amount of all of these, which
makes it a pretty good way to work on your alchemy without wasting money
on buying ingredients to use on failed potions. In the grazelands lots
of wickwheat is available and southwest of there (around Zarifel Bay and
Sadrith Mora) saltrice and marshmarrow are all over the coastlines. Of
course saltrice is found in almost evey barrel or somesuch all over the
game too. If you have some gold to spare the members of Wolverine Hall's
Imperial Cult there have 10 of each of saltrice and marshmarrow (I
believe) that you can buy over and over and work on alchemy right there,
selling the potions back to them if you don't need them. Of course,
usually I just keep them as these are extremely light if they wigh
anything at all, another big plus if you're strictly a fighter of such
and don't have a whole hell of a lot of restoration. I also use the "eat
it and learn" method but keep in mind that there is a chance you're
going to get the effects of some of these ingredients and may have to
rest or wait to restore some attributes or wear off an effect.

Every ingredient have 4 effects. with a low alchemy skill
you will see questionmarks for all four.
The questionmarks will be replaced by the actual
effects, when your skill reaches 15, 30, 45, and 60.
Until then rely on the recipes you find in scrolls and
books
with higher skill your chance of success will increase,
and the duration and value of the potion will rise

Correction. *Most* ingredients have four effects, but not all. For
example Racer Plumes have only two effects. Bread and Small Kwama
Eggs have only one effect.

If your starting out with a character at the very beginning of the game then
here's what I do:

I wander around the bitter coast around seyda neen and collect all the mushrooms
(violet coprinus and luminous russula). Mixing the two together makes poison.
It's not a potion that your character should drink, but you can sell them for
cash, and they DO count towards raising that crucial alchemy spell. :)

This is my first post, so please don't get angry just yet. I'm totally new
to a non-combat morrowind, so don't know much about magic and herbs.

How do I mix the things? And how can I use alchemy equipment when I see it?
When I click on any equipment, my character just takes the things off table,
and i get a crime reported 🙁

To mix a potion, take any piece of alchemy equipment in your inventory and
drop in onto the paperdoll of your character. You will then get an interface
where you can select additional pieces of equipment to use, and which reagents
to use to mix the potion.

Don't grab items inside a house if you're in line of sight of NPCs. Make
sure nobody sees you. Alternatively, you can buy alchemy equipment from
NPCs (try one of the Mages' Guilds.)

Some useful first recipies:

Restore health: marshmarrow + wickwheat (you can buy both in the
Balmoral temple)

Restore magic: frost salt (Whitehaven) + comberries (Adjirra in
Balmora mage guild)

Fortify Intellect: ash yams + bloat (both in Imperial Cult under the
Sadrith Mora Mages guild)

Restore Fatigue: many (saltrice, large and small kwama eggs, crab
meat, bread.....)

Hint: mix some fortify intellect potions, drink them, then mix the
rest of your potions (incluing more fortify intellect potions to jump
start you next time). When your Intellect is 46,000 or so, you can
make some very nice and very long-lasting versions of the first three
potions above! It's almost like cheating (but more effective).

This is quite true. If you have the cash, the best thing to do is visit
the hidden master of alchemy. Otherwise, eating it all is a very good way
to quickly advance.

Where's Whitehaven? Is this somewhere in a mod somewhere??

Merchants only restock some items, not all. Most of the time,
if you sell them something they restock, they will restock more.
That is, if they initially restock 1 and you sell them 4 when they
have 1, they will restock 5 next time. This is useful for
ingredients you want to buy in bulk (frost salts and comberries,
for example). Sometimes, however, they will only restock 1.

D'oh! Given I go there nearly as often as to the Sadrith Mora Imperial
Cult you would think I would remember something like that...now to get
rid of about 300-400 weight of books!

Given the fun you can have with diamonds later in the game anyone who
has played the game previously SHOULD know that you DON'T steal from
the Balmora alchemist! I did one game, forgot (I was level 20 or so by
then and suddenly remembered exactly what I had done at level 1...)
and got the shock of my life when I tried to sell diamonds there
later...
