Newbie Overclocking Problem

Hello all, It's been a long time since I've posted to this forum but last time I did, when I began to build my first PC, I received extremely good, helpful opinions and information from numerous members of the community. I appreciated that greatly and it made it possible for me a relative newbie to complete the project, problem free and very satisfied. This was about 2 years ago.

Well here I am onto my next "First time" with as the title states "Overclocking"

Here are my specs before I get to the problem

Intel i7 3930k
Asus Rampage Extreme IV
16gb (2x 8) of RAM (Ripsaw G skill)
GTX 690
windows 7 64 bit OS
Corsair 850w PSU
Corsair H1000 Hyrdro cooling system

The problem is that when I went to try and overclock by following an online guide I found

I followed it completely, using the (gamer preset overclock option in my Rampage extreme bios). I rebooted and it froze before I could download any of the core temp and burn in test.

So I re entered the bios and tried the same preset option and not touching anything else. I got eager and ran a benchmark from Total War: Rome 2 and got an average of 60 something fps but it stuttered and spiked constantly. (on the settings I have it on, running the same test previously, I had an avg of 100 fps and no stuttering or spikes)

So I again entered the bios and restored to default settings but even after returning to default It seemed a very small bit slower and was slightly so in the same Total War: Rome 2 benchmark test.

I WOULD LOVE TO overclock and it seemed so easy, which was one of the reasons I purchased that particular setup. So if anyone could offer any advice or reasons as to why I got frame rate drops and whether or not my PSU can handle the OCing. I'm pretty novice with this stuff so I apologize and tanks in advanced.

I did not look to your overclocking link.
So, correct me if I`m wrong but you said you changed something in the BIOS and then your run a Rome 2 Benchmark test.

This case, I assume that you overclocked your CPU in the BIOS and then you run a GPU test. Which is incorrect.

Kindly confirm your situation.

Yes, I Overclocked in the BIOS only changing to a preset oc mode, which this guide described. (guide used my exact same rig) the changes it said to make were all already chosen automatically by my preset. So again the only change I made is from NO ocerclock to a preset mode in my BIOS. then i ran a benchmark in the game Rome 2

The problem is I am following the guide to oc my exact setup, which is essentially using the OC gaming preset and when I do it says overclock did not take and it brings me back to the bios.

I then tried a smaller oc again using the presets, but the lesser option and it seemed to take but then running a benchmark in TW ROME 2 the frame rate would spike, just freezing and then getting back to normal frams for a few second the freeze again.

I mean if you overclock your CPU you should run a CPU intensive test not a GPU intensive test.

In your case, you overclocked your CPU and then you run a GPU intensive test which does not makes sense.

So enable to solve your problem, first clarify your situation, have you overclock also your GPU and tested for stability?

I overclocked my CPU only by using a preset in my Rampage iv BIOS. That was all I did. I tested it in the game, (being completely new to overclocking) I figured if the game ran choppy like that, something was off regardless of what I overclocked.

Oh, I see so you are a totally noob in overclocking.
Restore your clocks and repeat your overlocking again using BIOS. Not using your Rampage preset or whatever it is.

Give me your current core clocks by using the CPU-Z, if you don`t have it then download it in the internet.

We can start adjusting your clocks then.
