Newbie Question about items and gems

I have played my character up to 7th level and I was wondering if it
is necessary to hold on to the various gems (flourospar, quartz
crystals etc.). Are they ever used for anything or should I sell
them? Also I have found a lot of weird stuff like gargoyle skulls,
Slaad tongues, hearts, teeth etc. I can't figure out what any of this
stuff is supposed to be used for. Any help would be appreciated.

PS. If it matters I'm playing a fighter with the halfling thief as a
sidekick.

Gargoyle skulls, Slaad tongues and quartz can be used for weapons or armor.
Sell the gems.

Ah - but are you playing the original campaign, Shadows of Undrentide or
Hordes of the Underdark?

As I remember the OC, you can use things like gargoyle skulls and diamonds
to craft armour and weapons - go and ask the blacksmith (first and third
chapters), you also need things like Fenberry for later on (chapter 3?) to
craft some 'other' items (I'm trying not to spoil it for you if you haven't
got that far, so I won't say what they are). Most of it you can just sell -
you shouldn't need to keep more than 2 of anything either. In SOU, you need
some of the gems and quartz crystals to craft the gems that power the ring
of Mystra thing in the first chapter (which I haven't really had cause to
use yet). Beyond that I don't know because that's where I am at the moment.
I have just started playing NWN again after a long trip round Icewind Dale -
twice (it and its expansion were in the shop cheap). I finished the OC
before I left for IWD - so the details are all a bit foggy. Sorry. I think
I like NWN better though IWD was fun. Beliphet was scary. Mind you, I
don't much like the sound of J'Nah either. Anyway, to get back to the
point, my usual solution to the 'shall I need it or no' question is to find
a nice barrel somewhere and store it all in there until I need something -
don't forget to go and collect it before you move on to the next chapter
though.
